He seems to be getting work pretty often in smaller films playing on the same grizzled character even if the bigger roles have dried up.

That he isnt actually that grizzled hardass in real life doesnt reall stop that, alot of actors who play those kinds of roles are luvies really.

Had he not disappeared for a few years and basically put his career on hiatus ftom drug abuse and a farce and pointless boxing career who knows what great performances we may have got out of him...fortunately we still got the Wrestler. Which imo is probably his best performance.

Again though I'm not suire I see that, you look at the kind of roles his built his career on in the 80's and I don't see him ever having tons of sucess in the 90's.

I suspect if he hadnt partly dropped out to box he'd probably have ended up mostly on increasingly low rent sex thrillers like WIld Orchid, the 90's was the era of guys like WIll Smith who could give more of a clean cut image.
