They’re not that close. Music completely dominates basketball in worldwide popularity.

I don’t use social media or know much about popularity metrics, but I’d be curious to see what you’re basing that conclusion on.

I would bet just on a metric of knowing their names, Michael Jackson takes it but fairly closely.
In terms of knowing things about them, Jackson is far more known worldwide. A lot of people in the UK might know who Jordan is but couldn't tell you much of anything about his career, while most people can at least hum a few lines of some of Jackson's biggest hits.

Basketball is pretty international nowadays. And the face of basketball is Lebron. When you generalize music to Beyonce, that's not fair. Beyonce is famous, but she's famous because of the genre she sings at and the followers that follow that type of music. Beyonce maybe more famous, but it's much closer than you think.
