“Since early in the presidency of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Mexico’s pollsters have sought to measure public opinion about his potential successors. That person won’t be elected until June 2024, but López Obrador’s governing Morena coalition plans to unveil its candidate on September 6. Former Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum leads, while ex-Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard polls second.”
Polling
According to ElPais, Sheinbaum is polling at 47%, with a decent amount of time to go.

Polling
According to ElPais, Sheinbaum is polling at 47%, with a decent amount of time to go.
Sheinbaum has strong left policy orientations in fiscal, social, cultural, and environmental matters, which are on display when she speaks about climate change and the need for progressive fiscal policy, but at other times, she seems closer to AMLO’s half-hearted conservatism in favoring militarization.

On America:
Asked to choose between the United States and China, Sheinbaum said that Mexico has an “inseparable” trade relationship with its northern neighbor.
She noted that Mexico and the U.S. are “economically integrated” whereas “there is no free trade agreement with China.”
On the army in the streets:
“[Yes] until the National Guard is strengthened.”
On weed:
“This is complex. I can’t say yes or no at first glance. It’s complicated,” said Sheinbaum without noting that the Supreme Court has directed Mexico’s Congress to legalize the recreational use of the plant.
On whether or not to accept US help to combat narcos:
“Not if it is invasive.”
