Mexican MMA

Caieeen coulda been the goat, too bad he could never stay healthy.

Definitely. He had some really rare gifts for a HW. Such a shame about his injuries, his destruction of Bigfoot was scary to watch.

They are awesome, all action fighters. Moreno winning the belt was low key my favorite mma moment of 2020.

What has that to do with this thread?
Just pointing out MMA has a really long way to go in Mexico. You've got your first champion and even the young males (target demo) don't seem to know who he is.

I love Joel Alvarez,
Moreno is pretty good
Yair is pretty good
Aldana is pretty good,

I'd say Mexico is doing pretty good, I guess. If you think about it, outside power houses Russia, Brazil, and USA, they are doing as good as any.
Joel is from Spain, not Mexico

Obviously Mexicans have a long and storied history in the world of boxing. Fighters who grow up with nothing, and bypassing any kind of amateur career,so they can start making money right away. The toughness and willigness to throw down because they want a better life for themselves,and/or dont want to go back to where they started.

Its really cool to see more and more MMA fighters actually coming from Mexico. As a longtime MMA fan,it is thrilling for me to see fighters from there choose MMA over boxing, because they want to compete in this sport, and are willing to train in various arts, and flout traditional convention.

What's everyone's thoughts on Mexican MMA? While the intention here,is to focus on fighters born and raised in Mexico,I dont mind people talking about chicanos in here. Because I can think of nothing more boring than debating someone's mexican-ness and derail the thread. Mods can start cracking heads if that's the case. Unless its well thought out, I will completley ignore such things, myself.

UFC is investing heavily in development in Mexico

They in the process of building a PI there and have you land of adding 30-50 Mexican fighters to the roster4AB0AA2B-E445-453F-B64C-4C3F25E9DCE3.jpeg6DE997CD-F30E-4CA8-AC2B-0D5EAA6EAF1A.jpeg381FEEEB-45E0-47FD-81F7-D12B04652398.jpegC117774A-545C-45BE-AEFD-333D91CBD1B9.jpeg

Gabriel Benitez is quite entertaining to watch.

I got a several page long thread about why I think Mexicans will take over the UFC soon.
https://forums.sherdog.com/threads/mexicans-are-going-to-takeover-the-ufc.4195945/#post-165534973

I think Mexicans will be running the UFC lighter weight divisions. They are naturally good fighters and very durable. In the near future you will see alot of the Boxing talent start to migrate over into mma. You are gonna see alot of Adrian Yanez type fighters soon with similar skillsets adapting there boxing to mma.

In Mexico most people don't even know who Brandon Moreno is. Everyone knows who Canelo is.

Canelos been building up his name for years. Moreno just barely became champ and even then he made a huge splash. FFS he even got to meet the Mexican President. Moreno becoming first Mexican UFC champ is a big big deal.

Especially since Dana has been wanting to win over Mexican Boxing fans for years. He realizes that Mexico loves combat sports and are the key reason the US Boxing ppv scene is still even alive.

Why do you think UFC is investing mlllions in A Mexican UFC PI. They know the talent is there and the fans will support it.

As Werdum vs Cain proved when it comes to Mexican MMA there are “levels” to it

Yeah, good points. I referred to the status quo, and you're looking at prospects. Good stuff.

If we're talking chicanos, Mexicans already have a long and storied history in MMA - guys like Frank Shamrock, Tito, Brian Ortega, Dominick Cruz off the top of my head, but I'm sure there are many more.

If we're talking Mexican-born nationals, Moreno is very easy to root for and I hope he continues to make a splash. Yair has an exciting style but for me at least, harder to root for. They've been pushing him for years but he still lacks a consistent streak vs. top guys. Impressive he could hang with Holloway and had he got it done, would have been a shoe-in for a TS.
