Source? Franklin lived in Philadelphia. Grant was an Ohio man and was relatively poor up until the Civil War.

Interesting, thank yu. I was completely unaware that Grant owned slaves. I'm a bit surprised, since he evinces a distaste for the institution of slavery in his letters, etc. But that might explain why he manumitted his only personally owned slave. The source you presented shows his wife owned quite a few slaves, some of which he freed as well.
