To be fair, back in the day Sherlock Holmes was trash literature published in a second-rate magazine in Britain. At the time, people looked at it much like we look at something like comics today, or Harry Potter, and academics didn't think twice about it... For a while. Now Doyle's work is the cornerstone of countless careers and recognized as important literature of its period. That's not even getting into how novels, as a whole medium, were viewed. Today's trash is tomorrow's treasure...

Edit: Also, I think one of our better mods is actually a media theorist who - last I checked, it was a while ago - had some interesting publications in stuff that people might not think of as serious, but is actually interesting stuff in an academic context.
