I wish that last part was true. I'm a huge fan of TJ and I don't think any modern nation exists without his works but he freed like two slaves in life, four upon his death and let a few escape without attempt to recapture. All in all, like ten people out of 600. He 100% was opposed to slavery in his views and his writings, however. He was simply born into a particular life and never navigated a way out of it.
Washington freed his slaves upon his death, excepting those that were inherited by his wife from her father as he reasoned that wasn't his decision to make. His wife was a very religious woman and, increasingly throughout their marriage, Washington became so as well. His religious study brought him to the determination that slavery was a moral evil and all people belong to the Most High and not to any other man.
