I understand what you're saying. And personally I don't really have strong feelings either way.
I'll add this though: During those years in my area if you sucked you got laughed at. Right or wrong you either stepped up and improved or found a different activity like home ec club.
I'm sure it created the occasional druggie, but for most of us we learned the boundaries of our abilities and how to apply them, which in turn carried over to adult life. We learned a lot from it: teamwork, accountability, communication etc. But to me the most valuable lesson of all was: it sucks to suck.

I miss those years.
Yeah I was pretty fat until I was about 12 and got ripped on for it. Playing basketball and getting tall young stretched me out starting at the end of the 7th grade. I was never nonathletic, however. I still did better than average. I got borderline really good at basketball in the 8th grade.

I just think it really never messed up a single kid, and only a mentally challenged child would have mistaken their participation trophy for a trophy that said they won MVP or a championship. There actually are rewards when you get older for "getting involved" in group activities. It should be encouraged now more than ever. Yes, sports are generally a competition, but the cream will rise and the real rewards of being a top competitor in sports become apparent fairly quickly these days.
