To be fair, the US would have had a lot of those firsts if it wasnt for what was essentially political dick wagging inside the US military branches, and the fact that US officials were wary of having a rocket designed by a Nazi be their Cadillac to space (which I will admit was a fair thought at the time). There was also safety concerns which held up launching the first US astronaut into space, which could have happened about a week before the Russians pulled it off if memory serves.
What this also fails to mention is that the Russian path to space was also costing them a literal fortune in funds and resources, and several times the program was almost scrapped entirely. They had far more failed launches and tests than successful ones.
Final note: Sputnik was the first satellite into space, yes. But the first American satellite into space not only beat it in elevation, but also carried scientific instruments at the same time making it the first satellite that could actually teach people about outer space.
The USSR hit several milestones, and their engineers and accomplishments should certainly be acknowledged for that. But the US hit the most important ones, and that's what counted in the end.
Violence/Genocide: Do not condone violence or genocide on a person or group of people. You are free to attack a person or groups ideas but you are crossing the line when calling for violence. This will be heavily enforced in threads with breaking news involving victims.
