Republicans have a long history of white supremacy or that was a completely different party back then is the go to excuses by the left.

It's the truth though.

The Republican and Democratic party of today were radically different from those political parties in the 1860s. There is hardly any ideological lineage between either party as it exists today and those that existed historically. There is hardly any ideological lineage between the parties of the 1940s and the parties of today, let alone the parties of the 1860s.

Basically, claiming accomplishments of your ancestors is about as relevant as claiming personal credit for something your great great great great great grandad did like it means something today.

In all of American history there have been over 12,000 congressmen and senators. Only 150 of them were black and you want to brag about having the first token black on your team like it means anything.

Also everyone was incredibly racist by modern standards in the 1860s, Democrats, Republicans, and everyone in between.
