I always thought it was a cheap gimmick that the alien ships in Independence Day and Edge Of Tomorrow stopped working when the mother ship was destroyed.

After all the Waymo cars stopped working during the SF black-out I'm re-thinking my original conclusions for the above movies.

When I heard this on the news yesterday I was barely surprised.

It's like no one working on it ever saw that movie, or the similar plot point in Jurassic Park where the autonomous Explorers stop moving when the power goes out, stranding the cast.
