ADUs don't have to and shouldn't be container homes, just make smaller versions of regular homes.

The ADUs on the larger end of the scale are ~800sqft while the average home size in the 1950s during the baby boom was ~950-1000sqft so a modern ADU is only slightly smaller than what Americans lived in during what is widely perceived as a Golden Age. Something to think about.

You answered your own question I guess but to add to that an ADU doesn't have to be 800sqft, standard range is 400-800sqft though it varies by locality.

Of course if the yard can't fit the ADU then don't build it but you're against ADUs even where they fit which is insane to me.
