So his mother changed his name as a child to erase the history of his father, and as an adult he chose to honour his grandmother by taking her last name rather than keeping a name he had no blood tie to.

And people are framing that as though it's weird?

Sure
Thats so weird!!!

'Natural Setting' for Roasts?

I've been watching Roasts since Comedy Central had their first roasts, including 'Roast Battles' since they started, and have no clue what you're referring to.
I'm referring to real comedians making fun of each other in a real setting.
Mostly backstage or the green room at a Comedy Club, because of something they said or something they wore.
Roasts are roasts. Those are fine.
But these nobodies coming up there and writing wack ass material like its a fuckin Rap battle is stupid.
And the comedians suck as well.
Making fun of your friend because he made a stupid comment is natural.
Asking two people to stand up there and make fun of each other is wack.
Its not organic.

Can't say I agree with any of this, and I doubt most stand-up comedy fans would agree with it either.

Roast-battles are a subsection of stand-up comedy in which amateur comedians can make a name for themselves, develop a following, and possibly become professional. More power to them if they have thick enough skin for it because most people don't.

Good luck not laughing at brilliant insults thrown in this battle -

Mujeriego I think you're talking about street snaps, which is what it sounds like these "roast battles" are copying

'Street Snaps' ?

Sounds like they're just saying generic joke-insults.

Never heard of them before until now, and by the looks of it they copied it off of Married With Children with Al doing 'you momma' insults while sitting on the recliner with someone and the goal was to piss Al off to the point he gets out of the recliner.

Can't find the scene on YouTube.

Anyway my point being the whole 'Throwing insults at eachother as comedy' has been around for decades and Roast Battles is just a refining of that formula with comedians coming up with 3 to 5 original jokes specificly targeted to whom they're 'roasting.'
