Are the maggots being put there by the doctors to eat rotten tissue? Like back in the old days.

Because, like, the only way I know of maggots being on/in something is for flies to land and lay eggs on/inside.

I do wonder about the whole sticking something into that wound everyday to prevent the body from closing/healing it.

Wouldn't it hurt like hell to constantly stick something into an open wound? Do doctors purposely remove the feeling down there to prevent that?
