Dear Adi,
It was actually an atomized Nordic society, radical 'individualism' and lack of codified doctrine that did the religion in. Unfortunately, Norse pagans also weren't nationalists. They weren't even proto-nationalists and there was no sense of duty to the nation, much less any organized structure of armed forces anyway. People were obligated only to their own ambitions, family and particular war band (of which there were dozens). It's also a bit of a misnomer to say Odin or any other deity is necessarily worshipped in a manner that corresponds to Abrahamic faiths. The Æsir are overtly anthropomorphic because they are ideals we strive to achieve -- they are our spirit, they are our ancestors, they are ourselves, they are us.
