Ah, the good old days! When the British Empire could rape, pillage and burn our way across China! :)

This is such a magnificent painting by the master Edward Duncan, of Great Britain's first ocean-going iron warship Nemesis wiping out Chinese vessels during the Second Battle of Chuenpi in the First Opium War. She was commanded by Sir William Hutcheon Hall and owned by the East India Company. <3

The East India Company (EIC), or British East India Company was an English and later British joint-stock company. It was formed to trade in the Indian Ocean region, initially with the Mughals of India and the East Indies, and later with Qing China. The Company rose to account for half of the world's trade, and ended up seizing control of large parts of the Indian subcontinent (and briefly Afghanistan), colonised various parts of Southeast Asia, and colonised Hong Kong after the First Opium War, exercising military power and seizing administrative functions. At the height of its rule, The Company had a private army of about 260,000 — twice the size of the British Army.
