I don't understand why this is even a discussion. Can't people still be courageous, even if their cause is wrong? Should we try to revoke all the Axis medals awarded in World World 2, because certain Germans were responsible for some pretty atrocious things? Maybe we can revoke the Allied medals too, because of the massive death toll under Stalin's regime?
We can argue all day about the treatment of the Native Americans during that era. But the fact remains that there was a battle at Wounded Knee (in which the Lakotas shot first), and as a result, many American soldiers showed bravery and merit. Those soldiers were recognized for that merit. Besides feeling self-righteous, what does anyone gain from trying to erase that history?
