You can easily do the math yourself using John's Hopkins data. The current number of COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. is 98,852. The current known number of Americans who have tested positive for COVID-19 is 1,676,401. If you divide 98,852 by 1,676,401, it is .05%. And, that is just known positive cases, the actual death percentage is even lower than that (since we know there are many more people who have contracted COVID-19 than we have tested). The Flu has a death rate of about 1%.

Isn't it already a common practice across the country to background check all new officers at every police department?

I've never heard of a cop that was hired onto a department in Florida that was a convicted felon in Oregon, for example.
