i remember for a brief moment, like one or two fights, he was getting the official push from the UFC, was training at greg jacksons and looked like he was on the cusp of being a title contender, elite level fighter. sadly didnt pan out..

In his hay day, he was a pretty decent JBG disciple.

always came to bang.

<{natewhut}>
Well said, he always showed up and threw down.

Also, in my circle saying "what!" ranks up there with "yo Adrian I did it!" for references

Golden Boy Promotions should do a one night tournament between Melvin, Gomi, Bennett, BJ Penn, Gray Maynard, Jamie Varner, and any other LW-ish fighters from that era a commission will sanction and can be coerced back into the cage.
Yeah but Melvin would be LHW by now...

Melvin could’ve and would’ve became champion if he was more disciplined. When he was on, he was on.

I'll always remember him blasting Gabe Ruediger in the solar plexus. body shot TKOs are nifty

dude KO waylon lowe with a body knee. if he wasnt actually put out, he was so hurt he might as well been.

Remember seeing him at an empty Pho spot 5-6yrs ago. Seemed to me that the girl he was with paid the tab. She could've totally been holding onto his card but did appear like she signed check as well. Still can't believe Melvin lost to J-Lau , he was on his way to the belt on that current run.

Never really cared for the guy, always seemed to be a piece of shit human being based on his actions in and outside of the cage. However I do feel bad for the guy as he fought well past prime I assume just to make ends meat.

Dude had all the tools. Lightning handspeed. Athleticism. Killer instinct. Damn he was fun to watch. Like others have said, he lacked discipline unfortunately. Who pops for cocaine ffs?
He also didn't have a very good chin. Hell of a glass cannon

I watched him fight in local promo's here in ATL back in the day. He was super explosive, but very raw in the technique dept.

Fun story... Back then they didn't let us tape up our hands. You had to just wear MMA gloves only. At one of the fights I saw him at I congratulated him after his fight. He was very nice and thanked me. Then he told me that he thought he had broke both hands in the fight!! I know, I know, I'm old...
Oh wow, are you referring to the old Fight Party days?

Melvin has never been very good, but always exciting. One of my favorite fighters to watch for a long time. Was actually rewatching his fight with clementi the other day. It slipped me at the time, but he was only 24 years old. It seemed like he had been around forever even at that point.

He's one of those that had so much natural talent, but it was never honed in quite right

Had Melvin stayed at Jackson - Wink and dedicated his life to training he could've been goat. He had an abundance of natural ability.

he was alright but i never understood the "wasted so much potential" thing people say, even in this thread. he was explosive, that's it. he didn't have good technique, he didn't have good stamina, didn't have good fight IQ, didn't even have a good chin, or a lot of heart. so much potential to me means you have at least a few of the things i mentioned, not just one.

Nice, yup that’s it. I remember both Melvin and Abongo Humphrey (RIP) fighting on a couple of these cards. Melvin’s fight with Diego Saraiva really stood out to me at the time, he was just so effortlessly powerful and quick.

Yep! Diego totally wasn't expecting Melvin to slam him.
