I'll always remember him blasting Gabe Ruediger in the solar plexus. body shot TKOs are nifty

While I have my opinions about how he approached his career, it's hard not to respect the toughness of a guy who appears to be willing to fight anyone anywhere.

He has 67 total recorded professional fights (including Bare Knuckle.)
As I understand it, he had a number of unsanctioned MMA bouts back in the day during the Dark Ages of MMA.

Can he still call himself. ''The Young Assassin.'' {<diva} ?
Old Head Assassin, then?

I watched him fight in local promo's here in ATL back in the day. He was super explosive, but very raw in the technique dept.

Fun story... Back then they didn't let us tape up our hands. You had to just wear MMA gloves only. At one of the fights I saw him at I congratulated him after his fight. He was very nice and thanked me. Then he told me that he thought he had broke both hands in the fight!! I know, I know, I'm old...

Great anecdote!
Thanks for sharing.

Since your post count is so low, that's definitely gonna be a follow from me.

Happy Birthday Melvin!

Melvin's last MMA win was against Gesias Cavalcante in WSOF, back in 2014.
Although he last fought in MMA in 2019.

His last UFC win was a k.o of Mac Danzig back in 2013. He parted ways with the UFC after a decision loss against Michael Johnson.

His FIRST UFC win was against Marcus Davis, via TKO in T.U.F finale in Nov 2005.
49 year old Marcus Davis incidentally, won his last bout in November 2021. Which means he has a more recent win than Melvin...

Of Melvin's 16 final MMA fights over a 7 year period, he missed weight 8 times. This effectively meant his opponents had a 50/50 chance of a disadvantage.
That said, the first time he missed weight was against Cerrone in 2012, where he lost by KO.
The only win when missing weight was also his most recent win listed earlier.
A 1 in 7 win rate when eating too many doughnuts.

As far as I know, he only won 2 times in his 7 bare knuckle bouts in two different promotions.

All in all, a bit of a long slide downwards for Melvin.

All that listed, he was still exciting and I loved watching him win fights. I hope his health is good. Quite sad seeing such massive runs of losses. Just like Bigfoot.

Wasted potential, should have had a way better career

I'll always have fond memories of Melvin. He had a damn solid career before he started his post UFC shit show, and was always entertaining as fuck.

He could have been so much more though, it's a shame he could never seem to really get it together.

Maybe a dickish thing to say but I am surprised he's still alive with his reckless decision making and addictions

I felt like Melvin’s speed was one of the most noticeable advantages of anyone in MMA at that time. It was awesome to watch him in his prime and a real shame he wasn’t more focused. Damn he was fast.

It’s a shame his career and more so, his personal life went how it did. He could have been a champion

With wins over Stephans, Dunham, Siver and Tibau I think Guillard showed an insane amount of potential with great technique but horrible dedication.
Guillard almost killed Cerrone, Diaz and Miller too before being broken within the next 5 minutes.

I was a big fan of Guillard back when he was in the UFC. He was the old school Michael Johnson where he had the skills to compete with everybody but he would also find ways to lose.... or gas in Guillards case. Finishing Dunham and beating Tibau but getting subbed by Lauzon is just random as hell.

The first time I saw him fight was on a Hook n Shoot DVD when he was 19. A weak mind led to him wasting an incredible amount of raw talent.
That's my new excuse if anyone was wondering.
Also, excessive horniness.

Golden Boy Promotions should do a one night tournament between Melvin, Gomi, Bennett, BJ Penn, Gray Maynard, Jamie Varner, and any other LW-ish fighters from that era a commission will sanction and can be coerced back into the cage.

I talked with him the other day thru FB messenger funny you mentioned him he seems to be doing better these days still has the itch to fight / compete
