So does this mean he'll be more efficient with his energy pre-fight, yet still be inefficient during the fight?

Odds are, he tries to pot shot and fight at range against a lankier Diaz. He can't throw traditional leg kicks either. If this fight is truly at 170, he's probably going to be in a lot of trouble.
