Wow. This is not a good match up for Maverick. People going to count Maycee out, but I think there were many many many better fights for Maverick at straw-weight ranked higher than Maycee.
Maverick is a better fighter, but Maycee I think wins. Possibly by finish. Could be wrong, but I thought this was one fight that wasn't a good fight for Maverick.
Finally someone talking some sense in here lol.
In a way, this is actually a good match up for Maverick, rankings wise. That division isn't very deep at all, and Maycee has a bit of a name to herself. A win for Maverick here does more for her name than some of the other girls higher up the rankings, especially if she manages to dominate. The division being thin means there's lots of chances for girls to leapfrog right to the top with the right performance.
That said, my initial read is that Barber takes this one. People seem to think she has nothing to offer because she lost to a vet like Roxy and Grasso (who is great herself). That's crazy thinking.
Grasso is great at distance control and counter strikes. That's why Maycee lost to her. That doesn't mean that Maverick can do the same, because she can't and doesn't fight that way at all. Also, Maycee had Grasso figured out in the third round. I wouldn't expect Maycee to rematch Grasso and lose unless she's some sort of moron who doesn't learn from the most obvious mistakes.
Also, Maycee did fine considering Grasso is a great fighter, and lets not forget she was coming off a long lay off.
If they stand and bang, which is what Maycee will be forcing the striking exchanges towards, I don't see Maverick having much success there. I could easily see Maycee bullying her, hurting her, and finishing her.
If it goes to the ground, I'm not sure if I like Maverick's chances there much either. She was athletic enough to outwork Gillian once Gillian started to fade, but even then, she was neither good enough or explosive enough to stop Gill from controlling her for almost an entire round. Maverick could snap up an armbar from the bottom or something, but she's never really subbed any decent girls in their prime. It will be a lot harder with a bull like Maycee on top of her, using her strength and doing GNP.
It's an interesting fight because both girls are young and still improving rapidly, Maverick especially. I mean, the Maverick that beat Gillian would destroy the Maverick that fought back in Invicta.
Really looking forward to this one.
