I've never heard "mayate" used as a derogatory term for homosexuals. I'd say "maricon" is a lot more common. But yea "mayate" is derogatory for black or dark skinned people. I wouldn't say its equal to the "N" word though since it has no historic significance.

I've actually never heard anyone in Mexico use it (I just found that on the internet), and I've been traveling around Mexico for several years. I've heard maricon and marica a lot though lol

Damn, what a poor choice of words by coach Oyama. But, it was an utterance that I'm sure he would take back if he could because he's not at all a bad guy. I know him through my wife who used to have an office in Oyama's gym back when she used to work for "The OC Fight Doc" Bill Kessler a few years back.
