Been reading about this guy Marlon Vera’s trainer or whatever Colin Oyama apologizing about calling Ewell, a black person, the term Mayate or saying Mayate Killer, or something like that.

Any Mexicans or Latinos in here that can comment on this? I always knew it was some kind of term for blacks people, but from a Latino point of view, can you go around using this term while claiming not to be racist?

I mean, when I used to play soccer with Mexicans they would lovingly call me puta chino marica, because I have Asian-y eyes. Didn’t think they were racist because they were pretty nice to me and invited me to hang out with them and play.

Fighters have thin skin. Try being a white fighting In Brazil.

It means :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: in spanish, if it doesn't translate to that, its called slang for a reason. You ever have a rich wedo call you a mayate before? I have.

Is it as derogatory as calling a white person who is more successful than you a rich wedo?

Isnt it like saying ni**er killer in slang?

we call that all conversations between co workers.

Güero or how you fools say it “wedo” isn’t racist. At least if used properly. There’s room to make it sound bad. Mayate is never okay to use unless you are talking about a beetle. Even then I never called it that.

yes, this is exactly it, and referring to it as a fighting move does not erase the racism.

I am suprised Oyama keeps up a gym in Irvine, the place has been plagued with location moves and coach turnover for many years.

I am from Ecuador (same as Chito) and I have never heard the term Mayate in my entire life. It might be a Mexican or US-Mexican slang.
In any case, is normal for latinos (at least in South America) to call each other by nicknames like chino, gordo (fat), negro (black), flaco (skinny) without it being a big deal. In Colombia for example the word marica (faxxot) is commonly used by men and women and no one is offended because it is used in a friendly way

It has two different meanings that I know of aside from the real meaning of a type of beetle

Chicanos use it as a racial slur for black people and Mexicans use it as a homosexual slur

Born and raised in Wisconsin but my stepdad and all of his family is Argentinian and I have to ask: que mierda significa Mayate? en la puta vida lo he escuchado

Edit: post above mine has the answer to the slang but what is the literal meaning?

I'm Black, I'm from Santa Ana California, and I know it aint good

{<shrug}

Overblown nonsense.

Colin's job is to hype his fighter up. If he has to be a little racist, so be it.

very poor choice of words, no excuse
he knew everything will be recorded and public, why not turn on the brain

not sure what all this racial slur nonsense means however, I do know it’s Gonna be real ironic when “Jesus” shows up and he’s “Black” just like the original people on this “planet”, gonna be too late for apologizing then, judgment day will be glorious (He’s not coming back for singing, holding hands and dancing FYI)
