In their prime I think Matt wins 8/10.

Don't think Shields could take him down and Matt obviously has better striking. Not saying Matt's striking was amazing by any means, but Shields might have been the worst we've ever seen.

The worst striking for an elite fighter yes!
Some of the worst/weak hands i've seen.
But he is so good on the ground
He spent 5 round on the ground vs Maia and won!
Tough One.
I'll take Hughes too anyway.

Hughes was more physical while Shields is more technical.
Would've been an interesting fight between 2 fighters with similar styles, just different ways in which they got there.
 
I think hughes for sure. Hughes was stronger, faster, used well timed strikes to set up takedown, and showed the best top control in mma. He used a perfect fusion of wrestling and jiu jiutsu in his prime, even though he had no actual belt ranking in jj.

Not to mention his unparalleled gnp attack.
 
shields is freakishly strong wouldnt be suprised if he is stronger than hughes.. no joke
and hughes isnt knocking shields out

Matt Hughes was a freak in the weight room. Not sure about that.
 
I think shields only real good chance is when hughes would shoot in for the guillotine. Other then that hughes has the advantage everywhere imo

I absolutely dont know. I cant stand hughes, but he handled business. But shields has some of the best BJJ out there..thing is, matt had a nack for negating bjj guys.

Would pay for that fight.
 
50/50. Matt had the best bjj defense back in the day and Jake has an amazing ground game. Matt wasnt exactly badr hari on the feet and jake is probably the worst striker in mma history.
