The Immortal, who was almost cut by the UFC after losing three straight in 2010, spoke of Machida's drug testing controversy on The Great MMA Debate podcast with Damon Martin on Friday.

Brown says it took him just two minutes for a wikipedia search to reveal that 7-keto-DHEA -- the substance Machida admitted to using -- flagged up as prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

"A guy has to know what he's putting in his body," Brown said. "I've been on a web search for less than two minutes here and just did Wikipedia and it says the World Anti-Doping Agency lists 7-Keto/DHEA as a prohibited anabolic agent. Ignorance has never been an excuse. You can't go 65 (miles-per-hour) down the road and say oh I thought it was a 35 mile-per-hour zone. You still get the fine, you still get the ticket. Ignorance has never been an excuse!"

Matt Brown knows a bit about illegal substances - heroin, et al. He's had a great comeback but his liver is messed. If he had a healthy liver his body wouldn't be glass and he wouldn't be getting keeled over all the time.

This doesn't come across to me as an excuse. Machida opened up about his usage and admitted he was stupid for not knowing prior to usage. It's about as professional as an unprofessional act can get, if that makes any sense.

I'm not a fan of boring ass Machida, but nobody is convincing me DHEA is an actual PED. Okay, I know it's on USADA's list and all but come on... it's DHEA lol. If he's gonna risk it, why not some ol' sustenon stacked with deca or something like that?

However, I do agree with Brown. A fighter has to know what he's putting in his body. Still, considering the performance-enhancing potential of the substance in question, I believe Machida deserves little more than a slap on the wrist.

He's not wrong.
You're supposed to know what you're taking is within the rules,or at least make sure the guy who does that for you can do his job right?
Or you're just lying and got caught...

He's right. Fighters should know what's banned and what isn't. Not rocket science.

Machida should know exactly what he can/can't take, as a professional, but he's admitted that he made a stupid error, and it wasn't like he was shooting up steroids, or anything. Therefore, I don't hold any ill-will toward Machida, nor do I think he deserves to be labelled as a filthy cheater.

This "excuse" thing has gone too far in MMA. If a fighter mentions tactical errors he made during a fight he's "making excuses," if a fighter gives any reason for a failed drug test he''s "making excuses."

It's gotten to the point where a fighter cannot mention any circumstances for anything without being accused of "making excuses." Rockhold got shit for mentioning his staph infection during training camp for A FIGHT HE WON! FFS

People need to just stop, some of us are interested in hearing fighters describe the circumstances around something without that fighter being labelled an excuse-maker.

Yes, it's very annoying. All fighters seem to feel it is necessary to say "I'm not making excuses but" when giving an interview.

Yeah I always hated that. If a fighter talks about why he lost he's always making excuses according the Sheedoggers and other mma pro fans.

Yeah, everything is labelled as an excuse these days, when some of them are legitimate reasons for losing the fight.

When Bigg Rigg lost to Wonderboy, he drew some heat when he said he couldn't draw him into a brawl, and that his training partners could not emulate Wonderboy's style. Those may both be true, and are more of a kudos to Wonderboy's skills and discipline, than an excuse for losing.

The differentiation needs to be made, because it seems there are no legitimate reasons for losing in MMA, other than the other guy was better, when that really might not have been the case.

Yea and this is only the first time offense (unlike some others that I could name esp Belfort) and his supplement is not even illegal (except only to USADA) you can freely buy that stuff in any drug store and even Walmart.

Alcohol, caffeine, adderall, etc aren't illegal and are banned.

If his drug test comes back clean (with the exception of DHEA) then this isn't a big deal at all
