Maryland police officer shoots groundhog in self defense

The groundhog crossed the road even though it was told to stand down and back away from the vehicle. The officer had no choice but to perform a roadside execution while wearing sunglasses on a clouded day. He probably would've been eaten from the groin up.

Any groundhog experts here to assess in how big of a danger the policeman was?
