Martial Arts "expert"

i remember once i was having a couple beers with a buddy of mine that does jiu jitsu also... so this fat old guy starts talking to us and starts saying how he is a blackbelt in judo and he trained with royce every week and stuff like that hahaha so he turns to my friend and says: let me see your choke and gives the back to my friend.... so my friend puts a RNC on the guy but the guy does some weak tapping near my friend nuts and my friend didnt even know what the other guy was trying to do and eventually the guy went to sleep in the middle of the bar haha

shit was pretty classic..

Why are people so freaking stupid sometimes...

For making a post like this you aren't much better

Don't just label the TMA guys. There are plenty of posers who take Muay Thai classes, BJJ, etc, who also haven't ventured outside the air-conditioned comfort of their practice facilities, yet carry on like they are complete badasses.

That being said, though, I am a black belt in Shorin-ryu and Shudokan karate, but I don't attend classes anymore because we do very little sparring. When I trained there I had to start a fight club so that some of us harder core folks could get some real world experience. I like my school, and I've learned a lot, but I feel without going hard against a resisting opponent, you really won't be able to apply shit.

I feel the three years I trained in Muay Thai completely dominates over the fifteen years of karate I have taken, because we sparred regularly. There are, of course, lots of TMA schools that spar, but some do it more effectively than others.

And I have also studied aikido, for nearly a year. The joint locks are great for grappling, but everything else is crap. I got out of there fairly quickly.

Well said.

To the TS, yes. We've all met people like that. They're full of it and you'd do best to ignore them.

I was watching UFC 91 at my friend's house, and we had one of those loud mouth's who think he knows everything. He claimed to be a brown belt in judo. We were watching of matches, and everytime it went to the ground, he would say "i hate it when the guys are making love on the ground", then laugh. I dont know if he was joking, but if he is a brown belt, wouldn't he understand was was going on? He would then tell everybody watching what the guy in the match should do to submit the other guy, like we had no idea. The one statement that made me shake my head was when one fighter had side control (dont ask me which match, I forgot) the "expert" was telling us how he should pressure a certain body part (not the groin, lol) and the guy would go numb. Then he would tell us how he applied a move on somebody during a tournament he joined.

The funny part is he was telling us how he wasn't winning tournaments and he wasn't getting the points he deserved because he wasn't doing the traditional judo style moves. I dont know anything about Judo, but I think that's BS.

Just wanted to rant, haha. Have you guys even encountered a guy like this?

Either he's a liar, or he went to some McDojo Judo, unfortunatly there's a few out there. I'm throwing the BS flag on this one.

I suspect he doesn't know anything about judo either - next time you meet your friend tell him to pretend to do a different style if he's going to talk about pressure points, they're not part of judo. Maybe suggest he claim to be a ninja instead - not only do ninja's have much cooler costumes than us poor judoka, but they even have mutant teenage ninja turtles ... if you're going to pretend to do a style, why not choose a cool style? :icon_chee

Yes, lots of them. None of my good friends are like that but I have the odd friend who's a UFC nutcase. One time one of them started a fight on a couch where both him and another guy were sitting and he wrapped his legs over the other guys face, something straight out of the WWF. He was very proud of his "choke" afterwards.

"Who needs an undertaker now, BITCH??"

I watched the UFC where Franklin fought Silva the first time at Hooters, of all places. This guy at the table next to us was drinking to much and getting way too excited about the whole thing. He would loudly mouth what each fighter should be doing in each situation. He continued to get more and more drunk and annoying.

When the main event came on, and Franklin got destroyed, this guy lost it. He got up and began pacing back and forth fast across the room, frantically, as if he just got news the world was going to end any minute.

It was one of the funniest things I have ever seen. Probably my most memorable UFC ecperience, in fact. Just the sheer idiocy of this guy.

I had the same experience at the same fight, but it was at a Buffalo Wild Wings...and I was hanging out with the dude. Every time he went to the restroom I'd make fun of him with the people sitting next to me. The guy acts like the biggest expert on BJJ/MMA that there is, yet he trained for 3 months, got tired of getting his ass kicked, and quit.

I can't stand douchebags like that.

Ask him to do a throw (say uchi mata), and watch to see if he's good at it. If he's a brown belt (ikkyu) he should be quite good at it. Pick a few other throws - say harai goshi, de ashi barai, see how he is at it. Watch his posture, watch his kuzushi (ie how well he pulls on the arms, whether he pulls up or down) ... as a brown belt he should be able to do them gently and with full control on you, whether you have a breakfall or not (ie he should have enough control that he can land you nicely on your side without hurting you). Since you won't be resisting, it should feel smooth and effortless. If he starts making excuses about not wanting to hurt you I'd suggest he's full of it, or maybe did judo for a few months if at all.

my friend thinks he is a tough guy. he has about 30 pounds on me and is way stronger. But he thinks he is a great martial artist even though he never trains and thinks his forearm on the throat is fool proof even though every time he uses it on me I just arm triangle him. then he tries saying that grappling does not work and he could get out if he really wanted to.
