News Marlon Moraes became a cop

Joe Louis and Jake LaMotta ended up being greeters at Casinos which beats being being a janitor I guess.
Joe Louis got fucked so absurdly badly.

He did charity fundraising. Gave his highly in demand entertainment away for free to raise money for charity and the fucking scumbag cocksucker IRS* decided to charge him taxes on money he never saw and never touched and fucking bankrupted a man who held the heavyweight title for 12 years.
(In a time where there was only one champ, not this circus of 4+ different "champs" like current boxing shit show)

That shit pisses me off.
It was fucking criminal what was done to that man who should have comfortably lived out his days as a national hero.

(*I'm hazy on the exact details forgive me, but I am pretty sure the gist is correct)

He was a professional fighter…

In the world’s most premiere combat league…

No way, he should be applying to police academy after his career.

Cops around my way make around $36k to $77k. That’s terrible - again - after being a professional prize fighter.

It’d be a whole different ball game if he went to police academy after being a plumber.

Anyway, that’s how I feel about it. I’d never want to put my health at risk for money only to be broke or low income after all those years of damage.
Plumbers make good money

Shouldn’t he have made enough to retire or start a business
Depends. 2 or 3 million over the course of a 15-year career isn't a lot of money now a days (especially in major cities). Most of that money has probably already been accounted for in terms of taxes, training, and living expenses.

Same thing happened to Johny Hendricks. Made a few million then ended up foreclosing on both his restaurant and his house and now he's a cop. He lived an upper middle-class lifestyle ($150-200k per year) with a family of 5 so that money was all gone in a decade.

They get paid like shit - depending on the location.

But salute to Marlon for trying his best to feed his family.

Salaries have gone up in most places. The city Marlons at for example the pay range is 70k-108k which isn't bad. Especially since most cops do overtime or side gigs to raise it another 20-25%

Imagine getting pulled over by him lol

Don’t know if you or the Sherdog community will recall but there was another fighter, nowhere near as good as Marlon was, became a cop too…

His name was Josh “I’m in Pain” Haynes whose claim to fame was getting the absolute brakes beat off him by Bisping in the TUF finale back in the day.

Dude was pretty bad as a fighter but now he is a cop in Nevada.

If he's capable to be a competent cop than why not. And who am I to question someone's passion in life.

Good for him.

Kind of fits in with the stereotype that police are lacking in brains.

Kind of a sad tale as this dude has a win over Aldo and KO’d Aljamain and then fell off a cliff shortly after losing to Cejudo…

Drastic fall as he went on to lose 7 straight and got finished each time (if I recall correctly)…

Good on him.

Better tuck his chin when getting out of the squad car on a windy day in Fl.

Nothing but respect for a real American, doing one of the hardest, least appreciated jobs in current whackjob America. God Bless Marlon Moraes and may he be protected from evil out there.

Upon quick look in my state

Starting salary for trooper 72k, 2nd year 83k, continues up annually to 153k

Thats good money.

It varies with experience and location but I think most cops in my state make 6 figures. With promotions they can make over 200k. And the retirement package is famous for being quite cushy.

That's much higher than I expected, like double. In the UK I think cop salaries aren't even close to this, you'd have to be very high up to command close to the higher end.

Shouldn’t he have made enough to retire or start a business
Most fighters are financially retarded and don't think ahead. Moraes fought for a title and earned several performance bonuses and was paid $100k+ per fight. If he didn't invest, he has only himself to blame. MMA fighters are paid poorly only relative to other sports.

Lost 8 of his last 9 by way of TKO

<6>

Cool to see him as a Brazilian become an American cop! Maybe he didn't have residency and this was a good way of edging his stay in the US in stone
