Mark Zuckerberg Getting His Butt Handed To Him

I didn't watch it (don't really care) but just wanted to say every single take I've read on the hearings is the total opposite of the one in the OP (and the thread title). People are basically saying the Senate is ridiculously unequipped to even question Zuck and he came out of the hearing looking good.

Your missing the point if you believe he is coming off good your really missing the point. This will end self regulation the Government will step in because he had no real answer for them about privacy. They did ask him good questions its just bloggers who use social media platforms like to paint Senate and Congressional leaders as being old and disconnected. Some of the best questions where about the continuing problem of fake ads even as soon as yesterday the blatant fib by Mark that they make all the revenues by advertising "A ton from data collection and the sale of peoples preferences and even their personal photos could be sold as a package or for individuals to use for their own products or ads" when you use Facebook to post photos and videos you hand over the copyright to them.

EDIT: He has to make appearances in Germany, England and India and that's just a start. The Governments are going to demand more control of the content or they will step in to regulate it.

I don't have an opinion because I didn't watch it, but it's mostly people who follow politics that think he came off well and the Senate asked weak questions.

I mean the thing is 5 hours I believe so I doubt I'll get around to it, but I saw a bunch of clips where Zuck did just fine.

Isn't the average senator like 70? They are in over their heads. Some of the questions they are asking are ridiculous. What a gigantic waste of time.

A lot of shitposting from posters who have complained about Trump Tribe shitposting in the past themselves.

You guys are being exactly the same thing you claim to despise. Cruz made valid points, and none of you is addressing them.

He's not there to answer those kinds of questions. He's there to address a security issue.

He's there to answer whatever they ask him. Like being a monopoly. And CNN seems to think they blew it:

Mark Zuckerberg emerged unscathed from Tuesday's Senate committee hearing, and he did so in large part because most of the senators who asked him questions had no clue how Facebook worked, what the solutions to its problems are, or even what they were trying to achieve by calling its CEO to testify, other than getting some good soundbites in.

What the first day of the Zuckerberg hearings made clear is that many American lawmakers are illiterate when it comes to 21st century technology.

As a result, the issue that was supposed to be the focus of the hearing -- "social media privacy and the use and abuse of data," as Sen. Chuck Grassley put it -- was but one among many. And at the moment when the country needed a smart conversation about privacy, what it got was meandering questions and misfires.

There is nothing wrong with a company having a political bias. It was just Cruz being a dick. I personally don't think they do, I saw a ton of pro Trump fake news leading up to the election.

Regulations will try to give us a political censorship wall, like China's, to prevent any ads for non-establishment candidates in the future so that nothing like Trump ever happens again.

Well Zuckerberg and politicians seem to think it is wrong. Facebook is a media company with a monopoly. It having a political bias is relevant.

Some parts of that grilling were cringe worthy for Zuckerberg. He made it painfully obvious that he wasn't use to answering to someone else. Or answering questions period.

I'll make a Facebook for Low T minimum wage shipping boys. It'll be amazing, you'll love it, bigly so.

"I'm not going to do anything to improve the situation just complain because I'm a do nothing bitch"

There is no monopoly that's ridiculous lol.

It's a fucking website not a crude oil well.

No one is preventing a competing website from launching and many countries have competing websites already.

Myspace is still a thing too.

Popularity doesn't mean it's a monopoly. It just means they're putting out a better product.

It isn't ridiculous at all. Zuckerberg couldn't answer who their competitors are and was flat out asked if he was a monopoly. When he said no, the whole room laughed. If it isn't a monopoly you should be able to name real competition. MySpace. Yeah sure. You're smart.

A website or service/software can be a monopoly.

You're a moron. Nobody is stopping anybody from taking on Amazon either. derp.

Maybe if he's so dumb you can explain how Facebook is a monopoly. If you're calling Facebook a media company, which you did above, it's clearly not a monopoly!

Also, it's a silly question to ask Zuckerberg (typical politician move). It's solely intended to either look tough or make Zuckerberg look bad.

"I'm not going to do anything to improve the situation just complain because I'm a do nothing bitch"
What... I deleted my facebook years ago.

What are you even going on about Rat Poster? Calling out the obvious bias and suppression of free speech of Facebook is a bad thing to you isn't it?

Name their competitors. The senators asked Zuckerberg this question and he couldn't answer. Why the fuck are you defending this bullshit?

You're acting like Zuckerberg is the good guy here.

A lack of competitors does not necessarily mean they're a monopoly. They do not control the supply of a good or service. But if we call them a media company like you said they have an uncountable amount of competition. They're not, though, but just pointing out your error in thinking.

And I'm not defending the guy, they need to get their shit together. Personally I deleted Facebook. But that doesn't mean we need to make up shit.

Lindsey Graham
Who is your biggest competitor?

Mark Zuckerberg
Senator, we have a lot of competitors.

Lindsey Graham
Who’s your biggest?

Mark Zuckerberg
I think the categories — did you want just one? I’m not sure I can give one. But can I give a bunch?

Lindsey Graham
Mmhmm.

Mark Zuckerberg
There are three categories that I would focus on. One are the other tech platforms, so Google, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft; we overlap with them in different ways.

Lindsey Graham
Do they provide the same service you provide?

Mark Zuckerberg
In different ways, different parts of it, yes.

Lindsey Graham
Let me put it this way: If I buy a Ford and it doesn’t work well and I don’t like it, I can buy a Chevy. If I’m upset with Facebook, what’s the equivalent product that I can go sign up for?

Mark Zuckerberg
Well, the second category that I was going to talk about —

Lindsey Graham
I’m not talking about categories. What I’m talking is the real competition you face.

Because car companies face a lot of competition. If they make a defective car, it gets out in the world, people stop being that car and buy another one.

Is there an alternative to Facebook in the private sector?

Mark Zuckerberg
Yes, Senator. The average American uses eight different apps to communicate with their friends and stay in touch with people.

Lindsey Graham
Okay.

Mark Zuckerberg
Ranging from text apps to email —

Lindsey Graham
Which is the same service you provide?

Mark Zuckerberg
Well, we provide a number of different services.

Lindsey Graham
Is Twitter the same as what you do?

Mark Zuckerberg
It overlaps with a portion of what we do.

Lindsey Graham
You don’t think you have a monopoly?

Mark Zuckerberg
It certainly doesn’t feel like that to me.
