I ordered that UFC and when they announced Schultz replacing Benneteau, I literally got goosebumps and got out of my seat and started saying to the TV, "oh my God, it's Mark Schultz".
If anything they forced the MMA part, he only had two fights in nine years and it had nothing to do with the plot. Still there is a scene where he watches the Goodridge/Herrera fight despite being in the middle of the 80s and the movie ends when him getting on a cage against a fictional opponent as if he had a long MMA career.
This movie really enforces the stereotype of the dumbass meathead wrestlers. Was Channing Tatum playing a retard or something?
Came here to post about this broken timeline. It was clearly there just to mention the guy who he'd fought afterwards.

He had a fight in Jungle Fight as well, though there were questions as to whether the fight was real. Mark said it was supposed to be a pro-wrestling style match, but his opponent refused to let go of a triangle. He tried to get it taken off his record to no avail.

Need a source on him training before 1984. I believe Renzo introduced Mark to BJJ.
The Kimura and other holds have been in wrestling for a while.

That film was quite a mess. The worst timeline problem is that the movie makes you believe the murder happened the winter after the 88 Seoul Olympics, while it happened in 1996. The director was too lazy to clarify it, that's the reason why you don't see Dave kids when he gets shot because he didn't want to have to explain why they'd suddenly have to be 8 years older.

I'm totally on a Cejudo hype train though, so I might be biased![]()
I just got finished watching the movie, and the timeline was a bit annoying. They had the guys at Foxcatcher watching UFC 8 in '87/'88 (doesnt specifically label it as UFC 8, though). The film doesn't show the lapse of time between the 88 Olympics and Dave's death/Mark's UFC fight. I guess it can be assumed they're still in the 80's, given that they don't say otherwise and that the entire story's timeline is off base. They could have had a Goodridge look-alike for the movie as well, especially since they showed him elbowing Herrera into oblivion earlier in the movie.
They definitely took some Hollywood liberties. They made Mark a big part of the story when I don't think he really was. Mark left Fox catcher in 88 when he lost at the Olympics and retired. Dave began living and training at Fox catcher in 89 and was killed in 96.
