Mark Schultz from the movie Fox catcher in UFC 9

I ordered that UFC and when they announced Schultz replacing Benneteau, I literally got goosebumps and got out of my seat and started saying to the TV, "oh my God, it's Mark Schultz".

If anything they forced the MMA part, he only had two fights in nine years and it had nothing to do with the plot. Still there is a scene where he watches the Goodridge/Herrera fight despite being in the middle of the 80s and the movie ends when him getting on a cage against a fictional opponent as if he had a long MMA career.

this, i remember he had just 1 fight, he injuried his back in that bout and never came back.

This movie really enforces the stereotype of the dumbass meathead wrestlers. Was Channing Tatum playing a retard or something?

i red that Shultz doesn't like the movie at all.

Came here to post about this broken timeline. It was clearly there just to mention the guy who he'd fought afterwards.

That film was quite a mess. The worst timeline problem is that the movie makes you believe the murder happened the winter after the 88 Seoul Olympics, while it happened in 1996. The director was too lazy to clarify it, that's the reason why you don't see Dave kids when he gets shot because he didn't want to have to explain why they'd suddenly have to be 8 years older.

I found the movie quite interesting. I did not know the story of Mark Schultz prior to watching the movie. After watching it, I needed to Google the story to see how accurate it was. I found this page quite interesting to see some differences:

I also found it interesting that Kurt Angle also trained at Foxcatcher during this period. Here is a video of him talking about the murder of David Schultz:

Schultz was Chael's wrestling coach at BYU (Chael went to BYU his freshman year) and was the man who introduced Chael to BJJ. Schultz had already been studying BJJ since before the 1984 Olympics, where he used a standing Kimura (almost just like the one Sak used on Renzo) to break his opponents arm on his way to win the gold.

It was Schultz who told Chael that "bjj is the only thing that can beat wrestling"

What was with that underbite? It wasn't as obvious as Matthew McConaughey's Stallone face in We are marshall but it was there.

He had a fight in Jungle Fight as well, though there were questions as to whether the fight was real. Mark said it was supposed to be a pro-wrestling style match, but his opponent refused to let go of a triangle. He tried to get it taken off his record to no avail.

Sounds like a BS story from Schultz.

I've not seen it, so I can't make a definitive statement.

Perhaps Tatum's lack of skill as an actor led him to over acting? It's not like he went to drama school.

Need a source on him training before 1984. I believe Renzo introduced Mark to BJJ.

The Kimura and other holds have been in wrestling for a while.

Yep, you are right, I looked it up and he didn't start anything in bjj until he rolled with Rickson after he was already a coach at BYU, so after 1984, but before UFC 1. He had done catch wrestling before bjj.

I always found funny that Schultz was mad because there was some homoerotic undertones in the movie, but was ok with being depicted as dumb as a bell.

I used to bag Mark's groceries when I was in high school. He looked like a fucking killer. Then I'm watching ufc with my buddies (yes, I've actually watched from the very beginning) and I see Mark come out and destroy GG! My mind was blown away. Every time Mark would come in after that, I was extra careful with his bananas.

Loved the movie. I too remember when they announced last second that Mark Schultz was fighting goodridge. I was ecstatic and started yelling to my buddies, "schultz will kill him, he won gold, I'm so happy"

I've also read somewhere that Mark and Dave have never trained together in Foxcatcher facilities.

I just got finished watching the movie, and the timeline was a bit annoying. They had the guys at Foxcatcher watching UFC 8 in '87/'88 (doesnt specifically label it as UFC 8, though). The film doesn't show the lapse of time between the 88 Olympics and Dave's death/Mark's UFC fight. I guess it can be assumed they're still in the 80's, given that they don't say otherwise and that the entire story's timeline is off base. They could have had a Goodridge look-alike for the movie as well, especially since they showed him elbowing Herrera into oblivion earlier in the movie.

They definitely took some Hollywood liberties. They made Mark a big part of the story when I don't think he really was. Mark left Fox catcher in 88 when he lost at the Olympics and retired. Dave began living and training at Fox catcher in 89 and was killed in 96.

They also made Mark out to be some mental midget living in Dave's shadow when he was arguably the better of the two at the time.

I did not like the movie at all, I was really disappointed, yeah some time line problems I was like how can they be watching Garry Goodridge Helbow Herrera in the face during their preparation for the 1988 Olympics, The first UFC event was held in 1993,

And its so fucking boring and why is Marck Shultz depicted like he always has a bad hangover.

Do they really have to rub it in that wrestlers are boring people.

And fuck Du Pont. I hope they shove Teflon up his ass in Prison.
