It was mercy. Mir didn't know where he was, his eyes weren't following Hunt, his arm was laying to the side, he was defenseless and out of it. He also didn't respond or protest. (For example in the Barnett fight he immediately protested and tried to raise hell)

The ref recognized it and made the right call

Hunt wouldn't go for a sub though and could definitely land a hammer fist which wouldn't be good for Mir at all. I think this was better for Mir to take less damage.

That is why Nog stopped punching but it is still Nog's fault that he gave up position for the sub. Herb influenced him and it was a tough spot for Nog because Mir's face was buried in the mat and he just received a warning. If Herb didn't say anything Nog would have kept punching though.
