Mark Hunt: I hit harder than Mike Tyson

Pernell Whittaker was a combination puncher. Tyson was a combination puncher "with massive power". Saying he is just a combination puncher is only tellling half the story.
Yeah, but he was a combo puncher early on. It was what made him so scary. HW doesn't have many of those.

Go talk to a guy named Michael Spinks. Then come back and tell me what you've learned.
Spinks was beaten before the fight. His manager admitted as much. He was terrified.
Also Spinks was not known for being say, a big durable heavyweight. Because he wasn't a big durable heavyweight. Holyfield wasn't a natural heavyweight but he had a heavy's durability. He said Tyson wasn't that special in power, Tysons speciality came in other areas. Which is my whole point.
Tyson hits incredibly hard, incredibly. It would be astounding if there were not other heavyweights who , hit harder.
Which there are.
Hell Tysons own trainers said he wasn't the hardest puncher.
When it comes to the hardest punchers . Tyson is good but not elite.
Do you understand me now?

Go watch Tyson's highlight reel and come back and tell me what you've learned. Spinks was durable enough to beat Holmes twice and knockout Gerry Cooney. The same Gerry Coney that Forman said was one of the hardest punchers he ever faced.

Damn, I thought he was in the 240 range. He was certainly 250+ later in his career
Yeah he had old man strength in his second career and he definitely weighed at least 250. He may have been less than 250 one time for the Holyfield fight.

Love Hunt, but Mike Tyson was sooooo fast and hit sooooooo hard that he actually made me cringe watching him fight.

I have every Tyson fight downloaded on my computer. That man knocked people out with bombs! He was an elite puncher. He wasn't a big Heavyweight but at 5'11" and 220 in his prime he had the strength to generate tremendous power. He was insanely strong and combined with his speed he would just knock the daylights out of people. We can't know for certain if Mark Hunt hits harder without taking some objective measurements like they do in Sports Science but since Hunt is bigger you would think he hits harder. However much bigger Boxers and Mixed Martial Artists have lower knockout ratios than Mike Tyson and don't look like they hit as hard. I believe that Tyson knew how to generate the power of 250+ pound men with his strength, speed and technique.

There are probably a fair amount of people who hit harder than Tyson (although, Hunt likely isn't one of them). Raw power isn't what made Tyson special (not that he didn't have a ton of it).

I'm no boxing fan, but even I know that Tyson was vastly overrated. Might as well say no one today beats a prime Royce Gracie.

Tyson 86-90 was something of a phenomenon and it's hard to overrate his quality during those years. Does that mean that version of Tyson was unstoppable and would walk over everyone in HW history? No, but I'd actually argue his opposition during those years gets underrated these days, and he flat out destroyed the majority of the mid to late 80s era HWs. Tyson does get overrated by some, but just as many will underrate him, and there is no way one could make a serious comparison between the likes of Royce and Tyson.

I don't need to watch any highlight. I'm 44 years old and have been an avid boxing fan since I first saw Ali fight , on my grandads knee so to speak. I watched every single Tyson fight. All of us schoolkids shared videos of every major fighter.
I see you are still determined to misunderstand me. If you want to think Tyson is the hardest puncher ever to lace a glove good luck to you. He wasn't but I know how hard hero worship is on the admitting things maybe weren't as great as we think they should be.
You can throw in an old Holmes (no great puncher - what a jab) and an ancient Cooney who didn't actually land anything (you should have known Spinx was a hit and run fighter) and it wont make a lick of difference to the fact Spinx shit himself in the locker room and didn't want to come out to fight Tyson. You can ignore his own trainers saying he wasn't a legendary puncher. You can ignore Holyfield and anyone who knows anything about boxing to keep your dream alive. Fight the power man.

Spinks was a middleweight moved to LHW then short tenue at HW and scared of Tyson.

What about Buster Douglas through beat down of Tyson?

People seem to forget that Buster got KO'ed early in that fight. If it wasn't for the longest count in Boxing history that lose would have never happened, plus Tyson's life was already spiraling out of control at that point.

Who knows what would have happened if he had been able to avoid all the pitfalls in his life.

Sadly we are currently witnessing the MMA version of this with Jon Jones, unlimited talent wasted do to a lack of discipline.

The pre Buster Douglas Tyson was an elite puncher. I suppose you're next going to say that Joe Frazier's left hook was effective but nothing very special. Joe weighed just over 200lbs in his prime.
