"Nearly six million Americans - or 2.5 percent of adults in the U.S. - suffer from “marijuana use disorder”, according to a new studyby the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA).

The study was released as a record number of ballot proposals to either legalize or decriminalize marijuana have been proposed in 16 states this year, according to BallotPedia."

This has to be funded by the alcohol industry, right? Or at least a joke? Jesus Christ they're getting desperate.

I swear I have never heard the term marijuana use disorder .

I prefer the term MMP

Why not just call them stoners?

Because medical marijuana patient sounds better and the words we use to describe things greatly influences perception.

I was just kidding, and you are right. Controlling the language is important in politics.

I just get a kick out of it though because one mans stoner is another mans MMP

Marijuanan does indeed induce anxiety in lots of people.

The 420 types all like to think no one can find any negatives about weed but there are some.

I think most people would agree there are negative effects to MJ. But, it's hard to justify banning it when you compare it to alcohol.

How about adding this condition to the DSM, obsessive disorder creation disorder.

I don't agree with banning it.

But I don't agree with saying there's no issues just because people think alcohol is worse.

It's a potentially powerful drug that can cause symptoms of severe anxiety and paranoia. The problem is that without proper research, one has difficulty understanding the proper amount of active ingredient needed for relief. We have people basically sickening themselves through "overdosing" on weed. Personally, I've found 150mg of THC taken orally to be most effective in terms of reducing my own anxiety and relieving some pain, but the fact that all marijuana patients are indeed guinea pigs in a sense is troubling. Now go hand someone a bottle of 1mg Xanax and see how long it takes before they're snorting it and having withdrawal symptoms such as insomnia, paranoia, and borderline psychosis.

Marijuana as a schedule II, III, whatever needs to happen so that our scientists can do the proper research. And it cannot come soon enough.

there are negatives to many things. online gaming - people have died in China for example. eating. alcohol. the list goes on. making mj users criminal wont solve it though.

The study is so devastating that it is being praised by High Times as solid evidence to support legalization.

150mg? Jesus dude.

I used to be a pretty big stoner. I went to the Cannibis Cup in 2014 in Denver, and me and a buddy split one of those THC drinks, a peach flavored one that was 75mg of THC in a bottle about the size of a juice box, and we were couchlocked in our hotel, laughing historically and uncontrollably watching reruns of Chapelles Show for 3-4 hours. I can't imagine doing 150mgs -- it's not even legal to have edibles in Colorado that contain over 100mg.

Anyway, I'm not sure why the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism would be doing anything related to possible drug abuse. Maybe they should consider a name change if they want to avoid anything that looks like a clear conflict of interest. It's no secret the alcohol industry sees recreational marijuana as a threat to their business. People only have so much disposable income, and probably close to every dollar the legal-recreational marijuana industry gains is close to a dollar out of the alcohol industries pocket. Most people are going to divert some of their alcohol money to legalized weed, rather than just try to find additional disposable income for weed while spending the same on booze.

Its about time this reported. When you smoke so much weed that you cannot function in day to day activities without it, that is a problem. I have never smoked weed and will never. I enjoy everything in life and do not need to smoke anything to make myself feel better.

I know many people who smoke weed everyday for 15 years,
It's definitely addicting.
Weed becomes your cup of coffee in the morning, your pro biotic during the day. Then your sleeping pill at night.
Once it starts regulating your body. It's hard to stop.

I'm a pro legalization guy, and I will say yes some people have this disorder

Just like alcohol some people are dependent on pot.

You sound like a very very boring person who never lives life. Seriously.

Medical marijuana is excellent, and has a lot of potential to help people. It has helped me greatly, and provided an alternative to me to pharmaceutical narcotics with which suicidal tendencies are simply considered an inevitable and "acceptable risk".

Opiates and opiods are great medicines and have great medicinal value, also. They also have potential for abuse far and above what any marijuana or marijuana derived extract has - yet nobody denies their viability as an acceptable medicine, or criticizes the fact that they are legal (prescription only) medicines.

Alcohol is perfectly fine as a recreational use substance, however nobody would deny alcoholism, alcohol induced psychosis, skeletal/bone disorders due to excessive alcohol consumption &c. &c. exist.

What the problem I think some people try to minimize, or weaponize, is that marijuana has great potential as a medicine, and is a perfectly acceptable substance used in moderation recreationally, but there are those - and will always be those - who abuse such substances. Just as we would never consider it acceptable for a blanket prohibition against alcohol simply because alcoholism exists, we should not accept a blanket prohibition against marijuana simply because some people will abuse it in the same manner as an alcoholic abuses alcohol.
