TLDR: Reddit is just a giant website of Agent Smith-like clones who all say the same things and harshly punishes and ostracizes non-conformity.

Man, Reddit ain't shit..

Okay, let me be fair. Like anything else, obviously it has a lot of redeeming aspects, otherwise it wouldn't be so popular.

Reddit's selling feature is the fact that it has a subreddit (category) for any interest you can have under God's green Earth. Basketball? Got that! MMA? Got that! Underwater Hockey? Got a sub for that... seriously, they do!
So you can find wholesome content, interests that you otherwise wouldn't find a forum for, good and niche porn (or so I heard!!!) and if you cannot, you can create a sub for said content. Basically, it's greatest strength is that everyone can find a community of interest, or even be introduced to one!

Now... What pisses me off about it... is that EVERY FUCKING SINGLE PERSON HAS the same Cot damn opinion... on EVERYTHING! On some Twilight Zone shit.

Every one of them... to the point where you don't know if they are bots or not!

The site is structured in such a way to reward conformity... If you say something people like you will get upvoted and your comment rises higher and higher... people can even reward you if you give a popular answer. If you say something distasteful or unpopular, you sink to the bottom. As a result, people will keep saying the same things over and over and over again (circle-jerk, echo-chamber, etc.) to get karma (imaginary internet points... sorta like Sherdog likes). This will make even a sub created for unpopular opinions end up being a bunch of people saying popular things that everyone already agrees with...

The site also has a very, Very, VERY!!!!!!! strong left lean, politically. And everyone agrees with each other on every political opinion that is associated with the left.

Reddit a few years back even created a site-wide bot that banned people from (I'm guessing thousands of) subs if you were not pro-vaccine.

I just go on it and it's the same shit: Keanu Reeves this, Dolly Parton that! Ermagherd Doggies, so cute... Incel, Incel, Incel! Who hurt you baby? Ohmergerd I hate Kardashians! Generic Donald Trump diss... Antivaxxer idiot! Incel Incel Incel... I hate Uber drivers talking. Donald Trump. Keanu Reeves Cool!

They also have an obsession with flat-Earthers. Why the fuck do people get off on a sense of intellectually superiority to people who are still stuck in the 15th century? What a low bar to get pride from.

Lastly, Mods can power-trip anywhere, but Redditors mods are renowned for being power-tripping dicks. Many subs are trigger happy and will ban anyone who offends their delicate egos.

Sherdog is far from perfect, but at least there is SOME level of discourse here. Hell, that's what the War Room is about. Sure, people devolve into insults (that happens anywhere), but at least folks disagree with each other and can have discussions. Knowing everyone will agree with you hinders discussion. If they're wrong but don't have a reasonable explanation, they will just downvote you to death with no explanation... maybe ad hominem here and there, but that's it.

Anyway, thoughts about Reddit?

I like browsing Reddit. I don't post much though. When I do it gets downvoted to hell. I think my beliefs and opinions are just way different than the type of people that post on there often.

I am hooked on it though. I like watching the losing teams subreddit of NFL games

I also think it's a good way to get people's opinions on something. Like when I was looking for a car I would search the make and model on Google and "reddit". Could see a lot of common problems with certain vehicles and would give me a better idea of what I'm getting myself into than car review websites

Yeah, the niche subs make it so that you can get good information and advice.

Yeah, if your opinions deviate at all, you will be downvoted like hell. On the flipside I have comments that go to the top and while I like that, I don't do crap hoping everyone agree and likes it. I think some people will only comment if they know it's popular. Many people will actually delete comments if they get downvoted. To me it isn't that serious.

I think the more important question is why do flat earthers exists and feel intellectually superior to anyone who doesn’t believe in flat earth “theory?”

Thet deserve to be made fun of and should be.

I tried going on Reddit a couple times but that whole up voting bullshit and then sub comments branching off from other comments nonsense and everything turning into a giant spiderweb makes it impossible to follow a conversation, give it to me nice and simple like Sherdog does and ole Pete is happy as a clam

I honestly think they're too insignificant to expend such a disproportionate amount of energy on.

There are very few of them population wise. I've had one flat-Earther guy got mad at me online (who I didn't take seriously) and a guy in my gym who goes on rants to his captive audience in the last sauna any chance he gets.

They won't hold academic positions anytime soon so they're not at all influential.

I know a lot of people aren't fond of the sub layout. I guess I'm used to it, IMDB was a bit similar. I like being able to see the top comment or the controversial ones when the top comments are all just saying the same crap.

In terms of conformity people who are well informed on a various topic do tend to agree and when they don't it gets incredibly hostile because everyone involved actually cares and is invested in what is being argued about.

I prefer forums and FB groups tbh. I tried getting the reddit to make a comment on someones history post and the Reddit interface is goddamm awful(it's constantly recomending you things you have no interest in unlike the YT algorithm they are just shooting in the dark I feel) and the day it replaces forums and FB groups will be a sad one if it ever comes to pass.

Note-Also fun fact flat earthers historically weren't even real. And yes I find the amount of time scientifically literate people dedicate to fighting flat earthers to be bizzare and to have actually helped the flat earth movement grow.

It’s not so much spending time on them. But spending time combating their narrative, as other people will be reading that. And if flat earthers are the only ones providing information they (anonymous readers) could be swayed into that type of conspiratorial thinking if people aren’t pushing back.

And that type of fantasy land thinking, where people who believe ridiculous shit that isn’t even consistent with the set of facts everyone else has agreed upon for hundreds of years, is definitely problematic.

That said, I can’t even fucking read Reddit because the way it’s formatted is so fucking ugly and confusing. So obviously I don’t have an Reddit account either.

I liked Reddit years ago but everything you described is accurate. It's the same lame jokes over and over, having a differing opinion no matter how benign is always downvoted, mods are losers with no life and a major power trip (like the 40 year old manager at a dead end teenager job), and I suspect a large number of subreddits are astroturfed or filled with bots. Reddit is really only good for answering questions since Google went to shit on that front. Even the porn there isn't as good as it used to be.

I liked Reddit since I can find a message board for things I normally wouldn't be able to find. Like if you're having a problem with your Hulu and you can go there and ask a question about it and find an answer to whatever issue you're having. You normally wouldn't be able to find a forum for such a singular thing as that otherwise. I generally stay away from negativity wherever I go on the internet so I don't get bogged down in stupidity. Which is why I'll never join Twitter/X.

This is where you learn bots have been active on a lot of sites including reddit and social media for years, they're just better now so it creates a false sense of traffic, advertisers pour in more money and the bot flow can be adjusted to keep homeostasis in the community.

Welcome to cyberpunk hell, we've been in it for a decade now.

Also TIL (Reddit for "today I learned").

There is a thing such as underwater hockey
KciwVH0.png
I think a friend of mine has either played this or was just telling me about it (this was a few yrs ago-he was very involved in swimming back then). He said it's incredibly cardio intensive which makes sense as you can't breath when you're actively trying to get the puck. I think more sports should have underwater versions. like underwater Judo, fencing or darts. Or better yet underwater ice hockey it's the same as underwater hockey but the pool has frozen over.

They've banned so many people that it's not as interesting as it used to be.

#Bots . Reddit was been one of many tools of #indoctrination for use by #:eek::eek::eek:phile and/or politician to mind control unsuspecting googler
