Makhov warns heavyweights: Olympic Gold then UFC title

He won't win the Olympics. He won't beat Akgul. Good to see another HW prospect though

Akgul raped him like he was an amateur here. With the quickness.

Will AkGOAT waste his talents on MMA? Probably not, but we can hope.

looks impressive but how is his striking? for all we know he could just use that size to be a boring human blanket

He'd certainly be an interesting addition to the roster. Look forward to seeing him compete.

As long as trains with best mma coaches (i.e. Edmond Tarverdyan) he'll do fine.

Edmond has a 100% success rate with taking Olympians and turning them into UFC champions, millionaires, and movie stars.

Cannot wait for Cain to smash this guy the same way he did to Lesnar.

This guy is literally 10x the wrestler that Brock was and is still in his prime. He's as complete of a wrestler as any to ever compete in MMA. Brock was a Folkstyle wrestler who was an NCAA Division I NATIONAL champion. Makhov is an OLYMPIC Freestyle Bronze medalist, 3x Freestyle WORLD champion, a 1x Freestyle Worlds runner-up (Silver medalist), Freestyle Worlds Bronze medalist and a 2x Worlds Greco-Roman Bronze medalist.

Lesnar came to the UFC when he was already out of his athletic prime. He was nowhere near as athletic at that time as Makhov is now. This guy is VERY fast and agile for such a huge guy. Lesnar was a bulked up "pro wrestler" that hadn't actually wrestled collegiately in like a decade. That won't be the case with Makhov, he'll be coming straight out of the Olympics and having spent the last decade wrestling at the highest INTERNATIONAL level. Lesnar didn't have any international competition medals at the highest levels of the sport, Makhov right now has 8 at the highest level and he also won the European Championships in 2010.

If he picks up striking quickly and shows a chin then trust me, Cain is going to be the one getting smashed. He's an insanely quick learner and with only 3-4 months of Greco-Roman training he medaled Bronze at the World Championships and took on a 2-time World champion, losing by only a single point.

If we compare just their national achievements, since that's all Lesnar had, then he still shits on him in wrestling

National Titles
  • Freestyle:
    • 2006 Russian National Runner-up – 120 kg (Nizhnevartovsk, Yugra)
    • 2007 Russian National Champion – 120 kg (Moscow)
    • 2008 Russian National Bronze Medalist – 120 kg (Saint Petersburg, Leningrad)
    • 2009 Russian National Champion – 120 kg (Kazan, Tatarstan)
    • 2010 Russian National Champion – 120 kg (Volgograd)
    • 2012 Russian National Champion – 120 kg (Saint Petersburg, Leningrad)
  • Greco-Roman:

Cain and Brock have no World-level wrestling accomplishments. Even their national-level accomplishments aren't comparable at all to Makhov's. This guy is likely to turn out to be the scariest Heavyweight we've ever seen, at least in the UFC. Given his size, athleticism and elite wrestling background, don't think the UFC's Heavyweight division isn't concerned and won't be watching his first MMA fight very closely.

Most HW Bouts end with a KO in the first, not sure if his wrestling can prevent that.

As the only current UFC fighters with comparable MMA experience, him and CM Punk obviously need to fight.

Akgul also lost to him when it mattered most at the Freestyle 2012 Olympic 1/8 finals, where he wasn't able to advance on to the quarterfinals.

He was qualified to participate at the 2012 Olympics for Turkey. He did not advance to quarterfinal after losing to Bilyal Makhov from Russia in the round of 16.

Akgul came in 9th and Makhov came in at 3rd place, securing an Olympic Bronze medal.

Incorrect. About half do and the others that don't go to a decision where both guys are gassed to hell.

Wrestling is great because exactly two HWs have great ground games off their back and once you put a fat boy on his back, they're usually screwed. Like a turtle basically.

Hm, only 9 by KO in the first.

He will be champ and prove once again that wrestling base translates the best to UFC. The only one who can stop him is maybe Werdum but he's getting older and Makhov is probably simply too big and too heavy for him. He's basically from another weightclass compared to most UFC HWs.

Jon Jones is one of the easier match ups for him stylistically. Jon Jones struggled with Gus who is of his size, what can he do against Makhov who is much bigger than him? Nothing. This is a fight where Jon Jones ends up on his back quickly and stays there.

Makhov will essentially be a HW Khabib.

HW is pretty exciting right now, this guy could only make it better.

Not really if he lay and prays the entire division.

HW is exciting right now because everyone is either past his prime or doesn't have the talent. Cain has been holding the division for decades that's why there are suddenly so many contenders.

Bilyal could kill the entire division in 2 years.

Fair enough, but I like all the HW fights, Hunt has been a fav of mine since his K-1 days, so happy to see him at the top of his game.

War Hunto UFC 2016 HW Champ!

Since we're bringing up "the highest level" of athletes, it's worth noting that Brock and Coleman aren't nearly the wrestlers that Rulon was.

But Rulons style couldn`t translate well to MMA. He is a very good wrestler but relies heavily on his stalling and plodding slowly forwards. That would have been his downfall in MMA. There are so many wrestlers more suited as Rulon to have success in MMA. Imo he would never been able to have a MMA career like Randy.

Other than that he had serious weight problems at the end of his career and looked more like humpty dumpty.

Makhov is lightyears ahead of Rulon in terms of his fighting style fitting for MMA,

I predict he will lose at the Olympics and still come to the ufc and crush the likes of Werdum and Velasquez.

Rulon is a big, big boy. I remember reading an article that suggested he was offered $1m to fihgt Fedor after beating Yoshida in Pride, but that he turned it down because he didn't enjoy punching people. I'm not sure if it's true or not, but I would have liked to see more of him in MMA.

I don't know if the offer is true but that is why he quit mma
