It's a safety measure. As soon as he feels he can't get the shot, he goes into guard, so he doesn't get hit after being sprawled on.

Maia won in my eyes. Silva wanted NOTHING to do with Maias groundwork. Silva ran from a buttscoot
 
Silvia needs to leave if he is so bored that he can't treat people respectfully.

Maia took punches and knees and flat out rudeness and fought.

He was entirely outclassed, but only if you use that term to define fighting skills. Otherwise, he was shown to have much more class.

Anderson would be the most respected champion ever if he would just finish fights and stop toying with people. If he's so great, just finish the fight.

But I think we saw a bit of his fear. It really is not in his best interest to go to the ground. He wants to be a kick boxer...fine. But don't act angry at someone that wants to take the fight to the ground when all you want to do is keep it standing. It's hypocritical.
 
My thoughts on the fight:

- Silva went WAY overboard with his taunting/ yelling/ showboating. Apparently he was cussing at Maia during the fight (would like to hear from a Portuguese speaker about this). I understand it is part of his fighting style, but this was too much. It almost looked like he was on too much cocaine...

- I think by overhyping like this he actually adrenaline-dumped in the 3rd round. That would explain his lack of gas/ spirit in rounds 3 to 5

- Maia showed mental fortitude by not being drawn into Silvas taunts and going out like a true warrior in the last rounds! He gained much respect in my eyes.... even more than he already had.

- Looks like he really did improve his striking, even though pretty much anyone is gonna look like shit against Silva. I think he showed improved range and timing.

- There is no reason Silva should be upset about Maia going to the ground. Silva avoided the ground as much, as Maia tried to avoid the open striking exchanges early.

- I am getting more and more annoyed at the UFC commentary. How do they expect someone to fight against Silva? Head on and end up like Griffin?? I think Maia did very well considering the odds. Don't even get me started about the BJ/ Edgar commentary and scoring...

It'll be remembered again, for Silva not having the champion balls to get Maia out of there, and Maia's heart in standing with him as he did. Silva wouldn't have played for a split second like that on the ground in Maia's world. Silva needs to get the heat put on him. Cote or someone with stupid hands n a granite chin to smack da snot outa him.

Really don't care if it's Cote or someone else, after yesterdays performance i want to see Silva knocked back to the 3rd grade.

Agreed. Silva is making a total mockery of the sport, and did so last night at the expense of one of the greatest BJJ guys in the world, Damien Maia. I'm so very glad Maia took it to him in the later rounds, it showed who had heart in spades, and who doesn't. I sincerely hope someone knocks Silva's teeth out. I can't stand him anymore.

I was thinking the exact same thing. When Silva was screaming at Maia he was acting like he was on drugs.

I don't understand why Maia didn't try to get a cheap shot in while Silva was screaming and pointing to the ground. His hands were down, and his head was looking at the ground and away from his opponent. I mean if someone is going to try to showboat and taunt you like that, leaving themselves in an extremely vulnerable position, then make them pay for it.
 
I've seen some things online that said silva was taunting him with "Come on and hit me, playboy!" and "Where's your jiu jitsu now?"

Playboy in this context is something akin to calling someone a spoiled brat/bitch. Class divisions run deep in Brazilian culture.

I was begging for Maia to kick him in the head when that was happening. Maybe Silva would have taken him down with it, but then it would have at least been on the ground.:D

Have you ever trained stand up? It ain't that easy especially with a guy with Silva's skills.

There are things you can't see like distance and timing, Anderson Silva was out of ranged and has good head movement the last thing you want to do with a guy like him is throw a punch from out of range.

Pretty much.

Most guys that trained BJJ are from rich families.

The black guys live in the flavellas.

Plus you need to remember that they had slaverry not long ago.
 
5th round was awesome. Maia throwing punches on his knees must've made wandy proud.
