Economy Maher: Should People Who Didn't Attend College Subsidize Those Who Did?

hmmm.

i don't know how to address you in a way that doesn't cause you to be upset - though in general i think courtesy is the best manner to begin.

i'll try a different tact - one that's hopefully more to your liking.

let us begin again.

Hello you dumb cunt,

you and Mr. Maher, both dumb motherfuckers, need to pull your heads out of your assholes and think before you speak.

yes, the taxpayers will pay for it. as per Senator Warren, it will be upper middle class families that will be the taxpayers who pony up the bill (you know, the ones that have 50 million plus in net worth).

do you understand, you dumb chunk of shit? do i have to draw you a picture, you goddamn retard???

sincerely,

This was the best shit I've read all day. <Lmaoo>

@Mcountry Ive always thought Colleges should issue the loans and be on the hook for when default happens. If the colleges had to share the risk of bad student loans, you'd see a LOT of academic policies change in a big, big hurry. Like something with a backend. STEM, business, architecture etc.

I'm not sure it's fair to those of us that paid for our education and our kids education. My tax dollars shouldn't also have to pay for some other kids schooling. Further, isn't a college graduate in a better position to pay off their own debt than say a high school graduate. This seems like a give away to the better off whereas this money could probably do more good if it was spent in other areas.

I's also say that I paid significant taxes in California for the public university system there, it's the best system in the world. you can get a degree from berkeley or UCLA fir 40k total tuition. We should not have to also pay for some kids fancy private school debt.

What sad and pathetic nation we’d live in if our taxes only went to things we deemed personally benefiting. There are lots of things I wish my tax dollars didn’t fund but I’m not a selfish little cunt and understand that life isn’t just about me.

College has gotten so expensive in large part due to government intervention with student loans. They can pretty much charge whatever they want since its getting paid with a government backed loan that can't be defaulted on and given to people who zero experience in managing money.
To most freshman it's just funny money. They don't care if its $5k a year or $10k a year.

There is almost zero "sanity check" on the cost.

I totally agree with him here. College is an investment, if that investment doesn't pay off, then fuck you. That isn't on anybody else, especially poor people.

HBO 'Real Time' host Bill Maher talks about the popular issue with presidential candidates, free college. Maher said those who did not go to college and poor people would be subsidizing those who went to college and statistically make more than those who did not. Maher said he would be "pissed" and likened the situation to being a renter while financing the people who own the home.

"Let me test your liberalism," Maher said to the 'Real Time' panel. "If you have a bachelor degree you on average earn 65% more than someone who doesn't have one. If you have a master's degree, 100% more over the course of your lifetime. So nothing is free like a free lunch. Nope. Neither is college. Somebody will be paying for this free college and it will be taxpayers."

"So are we really saying that someone who didn't go to college should be subsidizing the people who went and got the benefit of going to college and made more money? Is that really a liberal thing?" Maher asked.

i don't know how all the numbers work out but the overall goal is to lift all of humanity upwards so maybe only people who did not go to college and who make above a certain amount of money per year should pay in? maybe anything over 85000.00 and then you start paying in.

the benefits of a more educated populace would be immense though on so many levels beyond just economic that i think we ought to be really getting this implemented.

lets not forget that free college would include all trade and tech schools and i dont think that gets enough attention.

edit-- reading through some of these posts it looks like politicians have already thought of this and that the income level for paying in might even be higher than i thought. its a positive for society.

I find it morally objectionable for "dirty jobs" workers like carpenters, welders, oil rig workers etc having to pay for some brainlet's ethnic studies degree or decolonizing fast food franchises theses.
Here's a much more useful solution - no interest loans for STEM degree seekers, the rest can partake in their hobbies of academic activism if they can afford it.

@Mcountry @HomeCheese @Only Here for Attachments @freakroor @PHATV @ocfightfan @JonesBones @BassAckwards @Possum Jenkins @kpt018 @cooks1 @Mike Hagger

the free college plan would include all trade schools btw. i that point is not emphasized enough. this means the policy would help everyone.

There are a lot of conflicting ideas going on here.

Taxation is tiered and is paid mostly by the wealthy, who usually are college educated. Someone working at McDonald's is not supporting someone who went to college. If anything, the person at McDonald's is probably see some benefit due to the economy being healthy with skilled workers.

Our H1-B Visa program works on the premise that it is best for the economy and everyone if skilled workers fill need positions inside of our country. This program is abused but the premise is what it is.

There doesn't exist an economic powerhouse that doesn't have a lot of workers that have post secondary educations. You want to be rich and uneducated, you better have massive deposits of oil. There really are no exceptions.

Personally, I do think that it should be subsidized for everyone's benefit but more effort needs to be made into steering students into viable trades and degrees. There are so many that would have been better off going to trade school than university. I also don't think that a 19 year old should be allowed to make a financial decision that affect them for 20-30 years. I would not see it as a bad thing if universities didn't accept people until they were 20-21 years old. Countries with 1 year of mandatory military service, I think is a good thing just for providing structure after leaving home but before going to college.

Why is this discussion restricted to college? I have to fund schools from my property taxes and I don't have any spawn. That's a bigger chunk that needs to be done away with if we're really saying fuck education.
