Economy Maher: Should People Who Didn't Attend College Subsidize Those Who Did?

Ehh then block him?? But that’s petty.

He's a Jehovah's Witness. What is petty is bothering people with trite courtesies and introductions/formalities where they aren't necessary. He is superfluous. He's like some dope walking around a 3rd world island trying to convert people with his goofy smile. He represents pettiness and superficiality.

Wait, so you are saying all these people with college debt and shit careers...... there is a shortage of those people? lol. There is a shortage of art and other useless majors out there? You played yourself.

No I mean if there is a shortage of say nurses then I can see were we the taxpayers helping with their education expenses.

By that I mean jobs going unfilled because there are not the people to fill them.

The Hyde Amendment exists so peoples tax money doesn't go towards something they find to be morally objectionable. As in, the act itself is wrong (in their view at least), so I won't pay for it.
I find it morally objectionable for "dirty jobs" workers like carpenters, welders, oil rig workers etc having to pay for some brainlet's ethnic studies degree or decolonizing fast food franchises theses.
Here's a much more useful solution - no interest loans for STEM degree seekers, the rest can partake in their hobbies of academic activism if they can afford it.

Yes, I know that happens and have no problem with it. Like making a dentist work in NY for X amount of years because the state of NY paid for her education. I'm talking about my personal dentist. lol.

He is a non entity. Poorer people are paying for richer people's college, that is a fact.

hi JonesBones,

i think its funny that you're doubling down on Mr. Maher's ludicrous conclusions on how "free college" is to be funded.

you're simply incorrect in your OP, and this has been courteously pointed out to you, yet you persist.

i think its great.

i come to the War Room (mostly) to engage and look at people like yourself.

Maher makes some sense and good points but I am not sure I totally agree. We can take a few steps as a country to make the public universities more accessible.

One issue here I do feel strongly about and is forgiving student loans, tax payers should not foot the bill for people student loan debt. I sacrificed and have saved enough to get my kids through college debt free. It would be totally screwed if my tax dollars go to pay off some other kids debt. I just can't see this ever happening.

N. You are shifting goal posts. The TS says poor and that is a number defined by relevant organizations. YOU have switched goal posts away from the TS because you are wrong and need to for saving face.

hi franklinstower,

yup.

then again, lets be fair; it must be an utter drag to trot out some ill-informed thread only to have it debunked - and rather quickly, too.

its ok for him to change the argument. i don't mind...have some sympathy for the poor lad.

Bill Maher is an elitist twat, with very few truly well considered positions.

This is no different.

hi JonesBones,

well, if that's how you see me, its alright JonesBones.

the thing is, regarding your OP - you are incorrect. like, completely wrong, and i've tried to help you.

i would like to hear more about how poor people are going to taxed to pay for this "free college" that has you so vexed. i'd like to hear more of this.

*hands JonesBones a shovel*

continue, by all means.

omg, this guy is the human incarnation of the Hallmark Channel. A fucking walking, talking greeting card.

hi HomeCheese,

but?

but he's wrong, since he has no idea what he's talking about.

Okay then what is the right answer? Should all universities be free?

You look like an idiot in this thread, you're obviously reading his posts yet won't respond to them because he's countered all the points you've attempted to make. Stop embarrassing yourself and lock yourself in the stock market thread where you can offer some insight

I've responded to all his points through other people. I don't respond to hallmark cards and I havent read his last few posts. Others can translate it and I discuss it with them.

I find it morally objectionable that my tax dollars are being used to assist a terrorist nation like Saudi Arabia in an attempted genocide in Yemen. But that doesn't compare to 'free' education though.

It would still work if you allow taxation to increase greatly with income.
I think a country where the best people for the job end up there can be stronger than one where the best people who’s family can afford to school them get the job.
Kinda like not having a police force with a quota required for women.
Get the best people for each spot, but tax the rich harder.
It makes a country stronger.

Lol no you haven't.... You only reiterated what Maher said and offered no insight of your own to counter his point about how under Warren's plan those with a net worth over 50 mil would be taxes.

I've went over taxes and who is paying them. I don't talk to people who talk like 6 year old girls and you are a creep if you do.

"Let me test your liberalism," Maher said to the 'Real Time' panel. "If you have a bachelor degree you on average earn 65% more than someone who doesn't have one. If you have a master's degree, 100% more over the course of your lifetime. So nothing is free like a free lunch. Nope. Neither is college. Somebody will be paying for this free college and it will be taxpayers."

"So are we really saying that someone who didn't go to college should be subsidizing the people who went and got the benefit of going to college and made more money? Is that really a liberal thing?" Maher asked.

debate that

Yeah... It seems like certain posters just latched on to the fact you used the word "poor" one time in your OP (an entirely relative term in the context of Maher's quote) and focused entirely on that word while ignoring the title of the thread as well as the substance of the challenge Maher put to his guests.

This doesn't sound so good on the surface but the fact is poor people pay way less taxes than middle and upper class people so the brunt would be payed by high earners or college graduates anyway. Under Bernie policies free college would go hand in hand with a 15 dollar an hour minimum wage (a raise for the poorest) and Universal Health Care, (a raise for all but the wealthy). When you factor in most college graduates making more money and paying more taxes over time this is probably a non issue.

That does nothing to address the social benefits of getting a college education because smarter more educated people do more, have more, live longer, and give more back than others. In the end this is good policy idea that would raise the whole country up IMO.

I would not be against making college way less expensive rather than free as an alternate option.

I work at blue collar factory where the avg line worker makes 80k. Why should they pay for your liberal arts degree?
