Ahead of their headlining battle at UFC 320 on Oct. 4, Alex Pereira (12-3) and Magomed Ankalaev (20-1-1, 1 NC) have gone back and forth on social media. The two were both in Las Vegas at or around the UFC Performance Institute earlier in the week, and Pereira claimed that Ankalaev dodged him. He followed up by suggesting that the Russian was a coward and a “sh---y” champion. That struck a nerve with Ankalaev.
Shortly after Pereira posted his video levying accusations at his past and prospective opponent, Ankalaev spoke up.
“Honestly, until recently, I had respect for [Pereira] as a fighter and a person,” Ankalaev said through a translator to media on Thursday. “I no longer respect him. Trash talk is something to hype the fight, you say something funny or to be [offensive]. But when you lie to people and say, ‘I saw him, and he hid,’…I don’t respect people like that. Why would you lie about something that never happened?”
The Russian continued, with transcription courtesy of MMA Junkie, “The problem here is that he was talking all this crap just a few days ago, and then today I saw him—it was just me and my coach, and him and his whole team—I approached him and said, ‘Hey guys, you were lying that I was hiding and stuff. I’m right here right now. What are you going to do?’ He responded by saying, ‘Oh, this girl said that, this guy said that,’ and he [started] making stuff up on the spot.”
