Years ago when both guys were active + relevant people thought that this was an interesting match-up... if only they weren't 2 weight classes apart.

Now both most recently fought @ 185 lbs.

Despite coming down from LHW, Machida is an average-sized middleweight and GSP is small for the weight-class nevertheless, (1) he makes it on the scale and (2) he is the linear UFC MW champion.

How do ya'll see this fight going?

Lol no thanks this fight would be slow as fuck.
 
GSP would give up size and strength advantage and Machida is a master of using leverage, which would really hamper GSP's takedowns. And GSP's standup was heavily reliant on his shooting especially in the later years. I think Machida would outstrike GSP on the feet, although it wouldn't be exciting and take an UD.
As amazing as the matchup sounds, it wouldn't be as exciting in real.
 
Machida takes this by TKO or decision. I really see no way GSP can take him down, And Machida wins the standup.

These days GSP wins rather easily. Machida is gone.

In their primes Machida would win via decision, possibly a TKO.

Bigger wrestlers than GSP couldn't handle Machida in his prime, I don't see what GSP could do that would be much different.
 
Machida would utterly thrash GSP.
 
It's interesting because GSP is the King of forward-going vertical level changes (stand-up to wrestling and vise-versa) whereas Machida is one of the best at lateral movement.
 
Prime Machida would KO GSP IMO. Faster and much better striker with power and elusive enough to avoid the ground. The fight would be similar to A. Silva vs Vitor... Nothing happens for a bit then Machida KOs GSP out of thin air.

If the fight happens now it would probably suck for casuals and go to a decision.

Lol. Machida obviously wins, 2 weight classes apart ffs. Gsp wouldn't be able to take him down and prime lyoto's strikes would be too much for gsp. See moose vs rory
 
Machida by not overextending his punches...therefore, not getting taken down by GSP.

Not sure where you are from but I do not know who these "People" you speak of are. I have never heard anyone propose this matchup. I think at MW it would be interesting but not entertaining enough for the JUST BLEED crowd. I would expect GSP to find a way to win but it doesn't jump out at me right away. I feel if Georges got him down he would control and GnP him but not sure he could get him down. Machida is so elusive that GSP wouldn't get his reactive double. I think Machida would have made it a point fighting style match and if he were losing would he keep going and looking for that one kill shot or would he adapt? Would clinch fighting favour Machida? Interesting Hypothetical matchup.

Today GSP wins by TKO via 4th round GnP
In their prime (Machida as a MW prime ie challenging Weidman) I see GSP winning a decision 49-46.
 
This is an awful match for GSP. Machida is a LHW who fought BJ Penn once at like HW(lol), was a master of distance, and had remarkable TD defense. Machida’s biggest weakness was simply getting caught by a fierce striker

In a 5 round fight I do not favor GSP
 
I dont think it would be a good fight to watch,and machida would catch gsp at some point
