Lyoto Machida vs. Cung Le - How do you see it going?

Laugh all you want, but this is an extremely interesting stylistic match-up. Machida is moving down to 185 and Cung still has some exciting fights left in him.

-Unorthodox counter striker
-Solid knockout power
-Great trips and takedown defense

Which one was I talking about? They have very similar styles and I don't think Cung would leave himself open like a lot of Machida's opponents have. I see it being a very technical stand-up battle with Machida winning a decision.

Chung is pretty stiff now adays. I see Machida winning by ud or 2nd tko.
 
cung is stiff as hell and slow considering his like 41 now machida would just run around him landing weak shots earning himself a split decision.
 
Machida by pacing himself and taking advantage of an older opponent's gas tank.
 
Their styles aren't that similar. Cung uses power TDs(from his HS wrestling background) more often than trips, and uses side kicks as a distance creator. Lyoto prefers karate style trips and more often uses front kicks as distance creating strikes. Le also has explosive spinning attacks, while Machida tends to favor straight strikes. Cung uses some movement to stay at kicking range, but he isn't nearly as elusive as Machida. Some of that might be due to age. Cung also doesn't usually use rushes as Machida does, he tends to stand back at range and go for powerful kicks when he has the opponent rocked. I could go on, but I get what you are pointing out, as they're two of the best karate practitioners in MMA. I think Lyoto size and youth(in comparison) would help him win an entertaining, but one sided victory. I could see Machida using his trips more in this fight because of the size advantage.

This, though I hate to admit it, it does interest me a bit. It would be cool (or boring as well) unorthodox karate vs. Sanshou striking battle.
 
Cung is too old now, but then again Machida hasn't been looking fantastic recently, so who knows.
 
Bad fight for Le. Machida finishes him easily, and Machida doesn't finish many people.
 
Machida would win more than likely, but man I have so much respect for Le, coming into mma so late in his athletic career, and learning/evolving as much as he did, always humble and gracious...I'd really like to have seen him fight in the last few months and have retired by now, the guy is 41 ffs, can hardly be expected to fight much longer, especially against high caliber guys
