Who's with me? This thread is for discussion of the greats like Paul Barto, Nigel North, Hopkinson Smith, Paul O'Dette, and of course the man himself, Lutz Kirchhof. No Sting allowed.

If there's enough demand we can do a separate thread for lute music of the Renaissance; let's stick with just the Baroque in here. No guitars, please.

I'm a big fan of Sylvius Leopold Weiss. One of the best Baroque composers I've ever listened to, and criminally underrated.

Robert de Visée did good work, too.

Some Johann Kropfgans. A little more obscure.

Johann Kropfganss is the Conor McGregor of Baroque Lute music.

You are in the Mecca of lute music.
I'm quite envious.
Are you around Frankfurt?

Sure. My wife has relatives there.

They are not Lutists, however.
Awesome.
I once got lost in a hotel there, being to drunk on some local wine.
It was amazing how patient the hotel staff was with me.

I think there was not a lot of better things you could have done there.

They even cooked me some great breakfast the next day.
I hardly remembered a thing.
One funny thing, I was working with some Germans and they had all of the schedule down to the minute.
"A is happening at 15:17" hahaha and they stuck to it.

Even though there's guitar content here I think this should be allowed in this thread because it involves a theorbo (aka "TRT lute" according to lute scholar Charles Manson). Though to be honest, the plucky little baroque guitar cuts through the mix more. Maybe because the lutenist is white-knighting the rather attractive guitarist, trying not to drown out the sound of the inferior guitar with his massive instrument.

This group, the Lute Duo, does a nice job with Gaspar Sanz's "Canarios." It should take you to the right spot but if not, go to 15:52.

Some nice Weiss pieces performed by Robert Barto.

This one probably won't work if you're outside the US.Get yourself a phony IP and listen, if that's the case.

There is one Brandenburg Concerto piece that fucking blows my mind.

I love the harpsichord attack and timbre.

This my friends is what happens when melody meets virtuosity.

Seldom do you find the two merging into a superpower.

Big fan of the GOAT Bach, but I'd like to keep this a baroque lute thread, specifically.
