Media Luke Thomas says MMA fans last between 5 to 10 years before the fall out of love with MMA

Agree and disagree, it’s hard to keep track of who’s in and out, and once the people who were on top when you started watching retire it definitely loses its charm

It doesn’t help that this possibly the worst most corporate era of the UFC where they will literally throw a good main event and then call it a day for the rest of the card

Luke grafted this take from Mike Heck. I can say this bc I listen to MMA Fighting and Morning Combat. Luke also borrows from Jed Meshew a lot. No shame in it. Mike and Jed are the most entertaining voices in the space right now. All that said, I don’t dislike Luke as much as I used to. He has some excellent takes of his own.

MMA 4 life

Otherwise you were a poser bitch who was never any good.

Fairly accurate for me. I'm definitely a casual meow and far less invested though I do still very much enjoy it. Dunno how much is age and priorities and how much is natural loss of interest.

Totally disagree, everyone is different. I have been watching since 1994 and never stoped loving it. I know the exact date I started watching MMA because I rented the UFC 2 VHS from Blockbuster, that was the first time I ever saw MMA and since that day I been watching.

I was looking to rent some more WWF VHS like WWF King of the Ring 1993 and Summerslam 1993 VHS and the UFC was next to it and I thought it looked kinda interesting and I wasn't sure if I should rent it but I thought what the heck lets get that too, it was great and I went straight back to Blockbuster afterwards to look for UFC 1 VHS and I rented that too and loved it, then I was waiting for UFC 3 VHS to come in stock in Blockbuster.

Sure there are periods where I love MMA more than other periods, but I didn't fall out of love after 5 years.

well im on about yr 28... havnt burned out yet
I have a family so I can’t watch joe fuckface vs mogamoeviadeg kzlegbobav
At 6pm on a prelim .

But at times when the card is good and the time is right im like FUCK YEA let’s lock in it’s Saturday night

I think the commentary can approve. The whole
Presentation can be tiresome

the older guys had a mystique about em... some guys fought all around the world in dif weight classes ect so i personally find the older days with more open rules and stuff a lot more fun.. now a days u got guys in the mma game to be celebs, game planning a lot more and not taking as many risks. that said this is all just my 2cents.. thanks for asking
I miss that we kind of had characters ya know, it had a little more shtick

Isn’t Dana and the guys limiting the fighters outfits and things they can do to bring attention to themselves ?

I agree with him, I was all about it in the early days, but when they took it from Spike TV to espn I backslid into filthy casual status. I still follow it and like to see certain fighters win, but I don’t watch any events that I can’t see for free on yootoob or my smart tv and of course I rely heavily on fight ending gif from our top “G” @KazDibiase

I think a big factor is the UFC have always tended to go after the "Pro Wrestling" market

I think he's right to a degree.

UFC 1 was my first event, thanks to a cable box with a hacked card. I was like 12 then and as a young heathen everyone acting like it was attempted murder in a cage just made me like it. I ain't counting those few years in this though.

I fell off after a couple years, then got back into it around '98 as Pride was starting to take off. Became pretty hardcore in the lead up to TUF 1, and stayed that way until 2015ish. Since then I still love the sport but I'm not near as diehard, don't get bothered missing some of the lesser events, etc.

Some of it is natural burnout, some of it is over consumption because what used to be an event or two a month are now weekly, and some of it is the fact that i used to be able to name the roster from top to bottom but now it's so damn big I'm lucky to hit the top 10 in every division.

And I'm getting old, more important shit to do.

I have watched it for around 10 years now. When I was a teenager I'd watch it every weekend and download the events to watch them the following day. Now I only pay attention to a few fighters, the majority of roster signees I couldn't care less about. I am not staying up to watch random fight nights, Shevchenko vs Fiorot or Belal Muhammad fighting lmao

The commonality & cause of declining interest in this thread is the watered down cards. Here’s the best analogy I’ve got for you - If you had a nice steak once a month, you’d really appreciate it. If you had that same steak every weekend for 10 years, and that steaks quality and cut was cheaper every year, you’d be sick of it.

UFC has watered down their product since the ESPN deal was inked. The reason why so many people got together at bars or threw UFC parties was the anticipation factor. Every month there was a stacked PPV, and we were starving for action.

Now days you have to wait 2-3 months for a PPV worth investing a Saturday night on. Every weekend has a fight night filled with nobodies that the ufc invests zero time in marketing.

Add in the political bullshit + parading around the GOAT terminology almost every event, and you’re gonna lose some interest. I’ll always love this sport, and I’m happy it’s evolved (skill wise), but the allure isn’t the same, and I don’t see Endeavor reigniting that spark. Especially when the average Joe has been priced out of live events due to avarice by the promoters.
"Every month was a stacked PPV" is such hindsight BS. PPVs use to be littered with Matt Hammill, Ed Herman, Jason Lambert, Brian Ebersole, Hermes Franca, Sam Stout & Elvis Sonisic.

It only seemed awesome because it was still kinda new.

Probably will sound absurd on this forum but I think that is generally true.

I used to be able to talk about MMA and watch MMA with tons of people who weren’t casuals but just about none of them watch anymore.

And personally, I still follow MMA results but I these days I only catch one UFC or any card a month, if that.

Mainly, I’m not a fan of any particular fighters anymore. I used to have a dog in every fight when it was less saturated, That might just be getting older but I really don’t give a shit who wins or loses. I used to care about that AND getting a good card.

I think that’s true for most people. Once the group of fighters that were good in the 5-10 year window are no longer relevant. They lose interest.

Plus, sustained greatness is hard to come by in MMA. Even somebody like Jones has had multiple hiatus and despite wins a string of weak performances(Smith, Santos, and Reyes stretch) leading into another hiatus. Cant sustain interest that way.

People get all in on a fighter and they all of a sudden want a boxing match or they lose and then can’t buy a win again like Conor

2006 to about 2018 I was a hardcore MMA fan. Couldn't miss an event. Could tell you everything about fighters. Just loved the sport.

Then in 2019 my interest in it started to drop. Went from a can't miss any event to now I really only watch big fights live and usually come to Sherdog to learn about results and then watch the good fights everyone talks about.

The only event I plan on buying this year is the next Jon fight. Besides that I can get the results from Sherdog and if the fight is good I'll watch it even though I know what's going to happen.
