Fedor didn't decline in his 30s, his style just didn't translate well to the cage at all, he still won all his fights in the ring after that.
Cage MMA is a completely different sport than Ring MMA.
I used to say that, but then it sounds like I’m making excuses for the GOAT. The more I think about this, I really feel that his style should have translated to a cage fairly well. Fedor would blitz his way in with casting punches, body lock/ clinch, and hit them trips. The standard octagon is 30 ft vs. a 23 ft. square for the Pride ring, so unless you’re prone to getting bullied against the cage, I’d think you would have an easier time transitioning. Elbows and lack of knees/ kicks to downed opponents for sure hampered some guys’ style. Shogun and Wand come to mind. Crocop also got battered on the ground by Gonzaga before the kO, if I recall.
I don’t recall Fedor getting worked against the cage in his losses vs Werdum, bigfoot, or Hendo, but its been a while since I watched those. I think the last scramble with Hendo was close to the cage, perhaps. Either way, Fedor shouldn’t have been dropping fights the way he did against those guys, ring or cage, imo.
