Luke jabbed inside Bisping's outside foot (left leg). When you are a southpaw or fighting a southpaw, you want to get your leg outside your opponent's leg.

Therefore, that put Luke out of position to see Bisping's left coming.

From a "in the moment" standpoint that's correct.

But his mistake was walking into the ring with the wrong mindset

I think it was the same mindset as always. He is always extremely cocky and has little to no regard to his opponents ability.

I think for about 80% of the population, you have to go in there thinking that you're better than your opponent. Otherwise you've defeated yourself.

Compare against the fight vs Chris Weidman. He was confirdent, but Rockhold had enough respect for his oppoenent to we wary of what he might throw. Vs. Bisping he seemed to have more of a "I don't care what he does. He can do whatever he wants but even if he lands, there's nothing that can hurt me so I won't even bother looking for it"

I know what you mean I just think rockhold has been overconfident in the past as well. I don't think he respected chris's abilities either. He used lousy defense on the feet in that fight as well and just tries to pot shot. And when Chris told him he would just shake his head at him and made no adjustments

Luke's mistake was no recognizing that Bisping was starting to find a home for the left hook at the end of his combinations. Bisping tried to land the left hook after the right hand 3 times earlier in the round and was getting closer and closer with each attempt. You can actually see the moment were Bisping realized he could land the left hook if X,Y, and Z.

Luke should have recognized he was the one at a disadvantage. Basically there was an information asymmetry. Bisping knew something that Luke didn't, and that's why he suddenly became more confident and decisive.

Luke should have recognized the left hook was getting closer and Bisping was the boss at the moment. He should have refused to enter into the same exchange, fainted it, and tried to see if Bisping would show his hand. Instead he tried to bully without any adjustments.

Technically speaking, Bisping would have NEVER landed that left hook if he weren't a shifty puncher. If he hadn't shifted on the right hand AND on the left hook he would have whiffed both. You have to be aware that a guy who is willing to shift his feet to land a punch might jump on you. Especially if you use any roll back style defensive moves.

Just to add to that^^

Luke consistently enters the pocket in straight line and exits it in the same exact way thus why the left hook was open over the shoulder.

It's a habit I noticed quite a few fights ago of his. If I did, I'm sure Parillo did. I actually think he tried it awkwardly in the first fight, as well.

Everyone talking about Rockhold's mistakes without talking about what Bisping did to influence him is missing half the picture.

@Rico I forgot they fought before... but you're right he uses a lot of athleticism to potshot and get away.

The least he could do is get in the habit of circling out instead of backpedaling.

I think the least he could do is tuck his chin, not point it at the sky while looking over his shoulder for no reason while right next to Bisping.

Obviously both inside and outside position have advantage in southpaw vs orthodox. Saying you can never have you lead foot on the inside is wrong it's impossible to have you lead leg always on the outside vs a decent fighter. Mcgregor and many southpaws are great with the lead foot on the inside and so so on purpose from time to time.

The bigger issue was having the lead foot on the inside while pointing away from Bisping obviously your lead foot has always to point at the opponent or you are always at an angle disadvantage.
And with Rockholt's bladed stance it's even easier to the opponent to move out of the line of the lead foot (same thing coukld/will happen to Stephen Thompson at some point there is no stance without disadvntages)

Rockhotl has also always been getting hit. Machida was also landing punches on the feet before running into that forearm/hook.
And Belfort was landing many punches long before the spinning hook kick.

I saw that as well, he always pulls straight back the exact same way and depends on his length & reach to keep his head from getting hit clean. You can only do that so many times before any opponent with a working brain figures it out and finds a way to capitalize on it. Luke never did anything different such as pivoting off, checking his opponent's hands on the exit, pushing or off-balancing his opponent so he can't throw back, or even changing the timing of his exits.

This. Committing to a lunging jab just to back straight out is more questionable than the angle itself. He could have thrown a different type of jab, or clinched after the lunge, or pivoted to his left.

I see... Fucking Bisping, you clever son of a bitch.

Yea then if you watch what Bisping does when Rockhold jabs, he split steps to change directions then hop steps forward and to his left. He mistimes his parry on the jab so he still partially eats it even as he closes distance and takes an angle. Rockhold didn't expect that direction and angle change, which is why he lunged in so far. He expected to catch Bisping way at the end of that jab, but instead finds himself with his back turned right there in front of Bisping.

Despite the horrible position he found himself in, Bisping still barely reached him with long, shifting punches. Everyone wondering why he always moves straight in and straight out has to realize that he's always been fast and long enough to get away with it, and was still nearly fast enough to pull it off against Bisping.
