It makes sense in a way that Weidman gets the shot over Gastelum for beating him, but it's also wrong in the sense that he's riding off of Gastelum's success.

When Chris beat Kelvin, Kelvin wasn't even in the top ten. Before that fight, he lost three in a row, and since that fight, he's done nothing.

Meanwhile, Gastelum immediately fought and KO'd the former champ, and beat top 5 ranked Souza.
 
Wait what? Recently Weidman lost to Romero (knockout), Mousassi (knockout), and Rockhold (knockout). He has one win since 2015 over Gastelum.

We don't use MMA math and conclude that because Weidman beat Gastelum (who has one loss since 2016), Weidman should jump ahead of a fighter with a better record. Or wait maybe we do. Lesnar is fighting the winner of Cormier and Stipe so WTF.
 
Weidman has never been the same since USADA

The maulings by Luke/Romero/Mousasi also did not do him any favors. Whittaker dominates him imo

Probably not going to end well for him. He has a losing record in NY and the last time he was in MSG he ended up on the wrong side of a highlight reel KO.
 
1-3 in his last 4, all the losses being by tko.

That's ok, we need Gastelum to get a nutritionist and drop back down to 170 so he can take out Wood and purge the division of his stink, imo

And we need the obligatory Charlie Weidman "that's still my boy" gif too, please.
 
Don't worry. Weidman will undoubtedly hurt himself and Gastelum will get the shot putting the world back into proper order.
 
Weidman will win the first and maybe second round. He was very competitive against Romero before the knee. Yes, he has certainly regressed since USADA testing began, I'm guessing he is 10 lbs lighter and weaker on fight night than pre USADA. But, I think he is a tough match up against Whittaker and will do well until he fatigues.

Whittaker is good but slightly over-rated imo.
 
I think gastelum deserves it more, but the whole reason mw is a gong show right now is because Dayna let mousasi leave.

Meh he looked good in his loses until he didn't. I think Weidman is still one of the top guys in the division. I'd probably give it to Gastelum before Wiedman but with him being a former champion and beating Gastelum not long ago it makes sense.
