Looking for a new Guitar

Spend a day going to different music shops and try out as many as you can. You might be surprised at what you like and what you dont. Everyone is different

I'm actually selling a Babicz Jumbo (all wood), Eastman Jumbo (all wood), and a Gibson Hummingbird. Hummingbird is probably outside of your price range, but the other two are not.

Babicz:

Get a cheap $100 nylon string (yamaha if you don't know which, but most no-name brands are plenty good) as your first guitar. It sounds awesome and you can practice on it for a long time without your fingers bleeding when your fingers are still hardening (callouses) and getting stronger. Steel strings are a lot harsher and not better sounding but they are louder. Only the top end steel string guitars sound as good or better than cheap nylon strings, from everything I've seen and heard.

After you've practiced and can play a little, then try your high-end steel string Taylor or Martin or whichever. You can hear a bigger difference than when you started and will be able to play it now to where it sounds good and wont discourage you. Then you put the nylon string in the bathroom or wherever you wouldn't put your nice guitar so you can practice on it during your downtime.
Lol I've been playing for 20+ years so my fingers are dead already. Just never ventured from Martins besides playing other people's that I didn't like as well and I have a fender telecaster and gibson les paul electric.

I like the low tone of the 000-15 I had, so Taylors are a bit bright for my liking. I still have the first Martin I bought, but it's old and has had a chunk of the body missing for like 10 years.
Get a custom guitar from Halcyon:

http://www.halcyonguitars.com/pricing/

Base price is $1600 CAD, so at today's conversion rate, it's $1220 USD. Seriously, they are really nice... I've played one once. He'll hand build it to your specs. It just doesn't have all the fancy appointments that drive up the price, none of which improves the tone. If you want maximum tone, it's a good choice. I wood get a torriefied top and a case. So, with shipping it will probably be around $1600 USD or so.

I also collect acoustics. I have Taylors, Guilds, a Martin, a Gibson, a Santa Cruz, a Goodall... if you need any comparisons, let me know.

Never played an acoustic Gibson. Is the tone better on the higher end or lower end?

Yea mostly it's because I read your OP way too fast, my brain thought the pic you posted was the guitar you wanted (sorta true) instead of the one you already had (comprehension lvl: 100)

The thing about Taylors that I like is the sound is all woodsy old-timey and jangly so you can make, like, 1800's gold prospector music.

Martins sound really nice and resonant but a little boomy on the low end and the notes are more not as distinguished and don't jump out as much because they're more of a blend than with a Taylor.

What do you mean? Higher or lower frequency notes or lower or higher end Gibsons?

I have 6 Taylors and a Martin HD28v. The HD model had a lot of treble and sounds sweet. Not as much as the Taylors but close.

Don't know what Gibson you have, but Martins usually sound better on lower notes while Taylors are a bit more vibrant on the higher notes. No idea about Gibsons

Gibson Hummingbird... it's pretty well balanced and dry. Gibsons are out of your price range though.

Look at Halcyon seriously. Email him what sound you're looking for and he can make you what you want. The guy is a luthier and makes higher end acoustics. He worked at Larivee for a while. He's no slouch.
