I know we have a handful of guitar players here. What acoustics do you guys have or recommend? I've been pretty brand loyal to Martin for my acoustics but I'm not opposed to trying something else like a Taylor or something. Would like to stay under $2k.

This is what I had before and sold it when I moved(000-15m). Might just buy the same one again but figured I'd see if anyone recommends something different.

I’ve never played a Martin before but I’ve heard they’re amazing.

I’ve played a few different brands of acoustics. The brand I felt the most comfortable playing was Ovation. The neck felt great. Nice and even.

I figure this should suit your needs TS

I mean, if you're used to playing Martin's, nothing else is going to feel right to you.

Before you buy another Martin see if you can get your hands on a Larrivee to strum a few times. Larrivee makes some really nice acoustics and should be within your price range if you look around. They are different than Martins but boy do they sing. Try before you buy though as acoustics are very particular.

I have an Epiphone Hummingbird, which is way below the price point you are looking at, but is a great guitar for the money-I’ve heard nothing but good things about the Gibson version but that’s probably going to set you back more than $2k based on the prices over here.

Taylor's sound the best. Martin's are overpriced. Yamaha best bang for buck.

Get a cheap $100 nylon string (yamaha if you don't know which, but most no-name brands are plenty good) as your first guitar. It sounds awesome and you can practice on it for a long time without your fingers bleeding when your fingers are still hardening (callouses) and getting stronger. Steel strings are a lot harsher and not better sounding but they are louder. Only the top end steel string guitars sound as good or better than cheap nylon strings, from everything I've seen and heard.

After you've practiced and can play a little, then try your high-end steel string Taylor or Martin or whichever. You can hear a bigger difference than when you started and will be able to play it now to where it sounds good and wont discourage you. Then you put the nylon string in the bathroom or wherever you wouldn't put your nice guitar so you can practice on it during your downtime.

Taylor's typically have a crisper, brighter sound, so keep that in mind if you're used to a warmer tone that Martin's are known for. Personally, I wouldn't narrow it down to just 2 brands, but if I were in the market for a higher end guitar, I'd primarily focus on solid wood models.

Get a custom guitar from Halcyon:

Base price is $1600 CAD, so at today's conversion rate, it's $1220 USD. Seriously, they are really nice... I've played one once. He'll hand build it to your specs. It just doesn't have all the fancy appointments that drive up the price, none of which improves the tone. If you want maximum tone, it's a good choice. I wood get a torriefied top and a case. So, with shipping it will probably be around $1600 USD or so.

I also collect acoustics. I have Taylors, Guilds, a Martin, a Gibson, a Santa Cruz, a Goodall... if you need any comparisons, let me know.

Since he already had a Martin, what makes you think he just started playing?

Got me there!

The way he's asking everyone else makes me feel like he didn't gain any kind of mastery of the Martin he had or even make it to intermediate level, maybe not even basic proficiency. Just a guess
