Hear me out...

When Magny got back mount on Lombard and was throwing a million small strikes, some could argue that it shouldn't be stopped because the strikes Magny's throwing are not hurting Lombard badly. But if Lombard can't get out of the position and is trapped, shouldn't it be thought of like a submission in that Lombard is stuck and can't get out? In this situation, I think the fight should be stopped not because Lombard is taking death blows, but because there's no hope of him getting out of the spot. Back mount and crucifix are probably the two most common spots where this can happen, getting stuck and maybe not taking the biggest shots in the world.

A submission isn't about being trapped in a position its about there being imminent danger if a fighter doesn't tap, like broken bones or unconciousness.

So when was the last time a ref stopped the fight because of a submission that the fighter didn't tap to or break anything / go limp?

It just should've been stopped in the 2nd after Lombard didn't
1) intelligently defend himself
2) try to get out of the bad position

Those million strikes did damage. It's like the Diaz style of punching, the damage keeps accumulating. Lombard was all wobbly from the beginning of the third.

Lombard was using the closeness of the bell to weather it. He was awake and fully aware of what he was doing. Also Magny's punches were not dazing him or drawing blood. I would absolutely hate it if that close to bell me weathering it on purpose and resting and then ref stopping the fight. I agreed with refs decision. Magny's punches were not doing that much damage.

Honestly the ref was just giving Lombard a bit of an oppurtunity to switch things around - being that he gave Magney that same chance in round 1 and look what happened. start of round 3 he took just a little bit of damage and the ref had seen enough - the tide was in no way going to change. But at least he gave him that chance and those shots really werent that powerful. Not a bad stoppage at all when you think about it people just like to bitch because it looked that way. Circumstances are a little different and Herb "early stoppage" Dean wasn't there. (in which case Lombard would have won via TKO round 1)

It's almost a shame Magny doesn't hit harder cuz this could've been stopped a lot sooner if he actually had punching power. I don't know what it is about him but he's really able to flatten dudes out on the mat and it seems damn near impossible to get free once he's done it.

Round 1 Magny was still moving, defending him self and trying to get back on to his feet. Round 2 Lombard was not defending him self him self he was just laying there, altho those punches were not very hard you just can't lay there and not defend your self, lombard didn't try to move the fight should have been stopped right there. The ref should have given Lombard a warning to defend him self if he doesn't respond then stop the fight.

Lombard took too many punches. I hope he recovers fully.

Those long legs cuz. They get in everywhere

To be fair, it's not like those shots were life-alteringly powerful, no matter how many were landing. Had someone like Lawler or Rory been teeing off on him like that, his chances of recovery would be basically nil.

Magny ain't bustin' a grape.

I made a thread about this in the grappling section a few weeks ago. Basically I think that in positions like this, where the only reason the bottom guy is surviving is because strikes to the back of the head are illegal, it should be stopped.

As a grappler I disagree, the position in and of its self means nothing. Taking it should get you something but just holding it should not (holding a body triangle from the back or even mount with no meaningful action is stalling)....note that's not what Magny did, this is just my opinion on your point.

My thought: here's your points for achieving dominant position, now dominate...but don't stall

I don't mean just holding it but doing what magny was doing - throwing legal strikes. I just don't think they should let those fights go on for 2 uninterrupted minutes of 1 sided pitter patter strikes when in reality it would be over in 2 seconds if they could strike to back of head.
